Personally I take the article with a grain of salt, it has some pretty heavy spin. It mentions casting costs, but does not address the additional costs imposed by all those extra bits in the cylinder heads. Still an interesting read though.

TVIS is not variable induction length like goodness forbid "fords"
TVIS blocks off one inlet port under 4400 RPM (on a 4AGE) to improve air velocity and cylinder filling at low RPM on certain models of 4AGE, 1GGE and 3SGE.
