    Default Speedo Problems?

As some know I have the ex Newcastle 1989 1UZ MX83 Cressida.

Now a little more than 12 months down the track, I'm experiencing speedo drive problems?

Without a speed sense or speedo working, the auto goes into LIMP mode and anything better than 30 or 40kph is impossible.

I have found that the "right angle adapter" between the speedo cable and the gearbox drive keeps binding & eventually seizes. This adapter is only available ex Japan and at AU$160.00. I recently replaced my original with an MX73 adapter and it lasted Sydney to Canberra and back, but next day knackered doing same as before. No Speedo operation, very next morning.

Has anyone else with a 1UZ FE conversion into MX83's or anything else experienced this problem? Is it a common occurrence and is there a cure?

    Cheers, Dennis

Maybe I should convert to Grande Electronic Speedo?

Can anyone tell me what I need to do this? I know the adapter to the box is available new from Toyota $360.00 and a speedo/instrument cluster I would need. What else is needed to make it all work between the adapter and the speedo head? Wiring etc etc etc??

    Cheers, Dennis

I had no issues for years with my original MX73 90deg adaptor.
I did repack it with bearing grease just after doing the 1UZ conversion though.

If you want to convert to electronic speedo, then I'd suggest just getting a second hand sensor from someone on here, should only be $50 tops.
The sensor runs off 3 wires, power, earth, signal, so only those 3 wires should need to go to the cluster.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are 3 spare wires on the loom at the gearbox from the original car.

The auto not shifting out of first without a valid speed sensor signal is well understood and documented.

The electronic speedo is certainly an option - as Peewee suggested they are a discarded item in a number of conversions. Chances are that the engine loom wiring stops at the bellhousing for this sensor but if you're lucky whoever wired it up may have left the wiring along the box as well - you would need to find the correct wire in the engine loom near the ECU but once again the ease of accomplishing that will depend on how it was wired.
There are some minor differences in the pinouts of the mechanical cluster and electronic cluster but nothing that's not manageable.
