    Default w5x gearbox rear seals

my w58 (i think thats what it is) is leaking oil out of the rear extension housing, where the tail shaft yoke pushes in. now im not 100% sure what this box is out of or if its even a w58 (havent counted ratios yet) but im wondering if anyone knows if the rear oil seal is common to w5x boxes? or does the w57 one not fit a w58?

also how hard is changing the seal? just a matter of picking the old one out and tapping the new one in? or do i have to disassemble the box?

    cheers,
    Craig.

Rear seal is the same for all W5x boxes. Installation is easy, no need to remove/disassemble the box.

Mine have all been fine but I always made sure I started with a new yoke as many have a groove worn into them from the seal or are scored.

Never had a single drip from the rear seal.

I'd be having a very careful and close look at the outer surface of the yoke to make sure it isn't marked or scored.

Yep, also if there's a bit of surface rust on the yoke (which doesn't take long) it will tear up your nice new seal and start leaking again.

i think thats where i screwed up, my tailshaft has been sitting for a while and i think it may have had a little surface rust on it. i didn't check and pushed it in, so thats my problem i think.

Just to bump this up. I thought i fixed it but nope.

Is my tailshaft out too far?

Would this cause it to leak from the rear seal? Im not 100% sure its leaking from the seal so i removed the shifterhousing and put gasket goo on it and then tried that. Still leaked so i guess its the yoke.

Last option is get new uni joints and a new yoke.

    Nope, tail shaft is fine.
You are missing the ring/cover that goes around the outside (just a dust/asthetics cover).

You could have put the seal in badly, I've done it before.

You'll see the seal is lightly spring loaded. It is possible to fuck this quite easily whilst fitting the seal.

You might want to make sure the oil is actually not leaking from somewhere else, like up higher on the box. It may be dripping down to look like it's coming out of the rear seal.

Further to what GT just said, I've not yet seen a shifter leak, but I have seen the shifter housing leak.

shifter wont leak unless you roll the car

Are you sure its oil ? and not grease from a newly fitted uni joint..

mine was leaking from the rear seal i got a genuine toyota one for a ma61 i think. 98% of my oil leak is now gone, i think my spedo drive might be leaking a little aswell and it tends to track down that way so maybe check that out as well.
