I'd be looking at the crank angle sensor. If it's not installed properly it can freewheel on the crank and send an unstable signal to the ECU. I've seen it happen before on a 1JZ, took us ages to figure that out!
i'm asking on behalf of my friend. recently he replaced his 2JZGTE Aristo timing belt. after put back everything the engine just won't start... any idea where to start with? he is a reputable mechanic so he knows what he did. after messing around, still no sign of life on the 2JZ. any one has clues on where to troubleshoot?

take covers off and double and tripple check all marks to make sure everything is lined up, could be that crank is 180degrees out and the spark plugs are trying to fire and bdc instead of tdc.
Turbo flutter. : Its like a burp and a hiccup at the same time.
or what norbie said

Everyone forgets to remove the lower belt guide and if they pull the lower timing pulley off it stuffs the sensor ring for the crank angle sensor.

thanks for the tips and i'll heading over his workshop later... cheers..
Could you elaborate on that please?Originally Posted by Norbie
Isn't the sensing ring keyed on the crank? Meaning it can't be installed incorrectly and can't freewheel?
On the JZ's, is it between the timing pulley and crankshaft pulley? If so, I don't understand how it's possible that that will move then the crank pulley bolt is even mildly tight...
Is it like this?
How does it stuff it? Just trying to picture what happens...Originally Posted by cambelt1

I'm not 100% sure how it can happen because I wasn't there when the problem was found, but I believe the sensor disc was a bit munted and needed to be hammered flat, so I'm guessing it wasn't on straight when the crank bolt was tightened.

The plate was probably out of position (forward of the key) when the crank pulley was installed.
The crank pulley would then "punch" the key through the steel of the plate as it moved backwards toward the timing pulley. (Assuming that the crank bolt was used to pull the crank pulley back to the installed position.)
Does it have spark & injector triggering, if so its probably just the cam timing is not correct ...
Mos,
The 1JZ is different to the 1UZ.
The trigger wheel is mounted to the rear of the pulley. It isn't a separate plate.

Seriously though, how do you fk it up?... Must be really special...

The sensor rotor is peened onto the rear of the crank pulley , Now theres a timing belt guide on the timing case , you can get the belt off with the guide in place but if you try to remove the crank gear with the guide still there it just pulls the sensor rotor off the crank gear wrecking it .

I remember one guy on here managing to separate the crank trigger from the timing pulley on the 2j, possibly by doing that very thing. on the plus side, the timing pulley is not a toyota $$$ special.
is it coughing and trying to fire, or just dead cranking?
