black box + rubber grommits & tubing *nods*
Hi all,
I need a completely sealed battery box to go in the back of my RA28.
Those common black boxes are not sealed and will not pass rego as they will vent into the cabin.
The only boxes i can find are made by Moroso and go for ~$200... far more than i think i should spend on such an item.
I have also called various marine and caravan stores with no luck.
Anyone know where i could find something that will do the job as decent price?
Thanks!
(and before you ask, running a sealed gelcell or similar still needs to be in a sealed box).

Tupperware my friend, try an opshop, failing that As above
The other option would be too get a externally vented battery, they have a breather tube runing off them, which then needs to go through a hole in the body of the car to vent externally, as used in porsches etc, down side is they probably are pretty pricey ....

still needs to be in a box according to our ever brilliant RTA.
Seal the boot.
A few pieces of sheet metal plus some welding is cheaper then a box to seal it.
Since then, the boot becomes the box...![]()
And he's just defaced his car![]()

cant say ive ever seen a RA28 with a sealed boot.
my plan with the supra is to cut the wheel well out and leave a deep box for the battery. then you might have 2-3inches of battery protruding above the floor. make a metal lid that bolts to the floor and seals and your done.
probably the same deal with the surge tank
hello
Tupperwear works, a sealed or vented battery should pass if its in a box and the tube runs outside, there are lots of prestige cars with vented batterys under the rear seat that just have the tube running out the floor
I had one of the Mercedes batteries, and was told in no undertain terms by RTA and engineer that it would still have to be boxed. Would love to be proven wrong tho![]()
Why not make your own?Originally Posted by MWP
Surely some Aluminium angle and sheet can't be that much.
IIRC I paid about $40 all up for some similar stuff that would have made at least three boxes from the local supplier.
And you know you will get a decent result doing it yourself.
My sig has been pruned as it was over 5 lines long.
G'day mate,
i was in a simmilar predicament to you with my 28 which now has the battery mounted where the rear seat was.
i have one of those marine boxes, and have made a custom flat aluminium lid for it, which would be very easy to seal - but i haven't.
i have one of those exteranally vented batteries with the tube running outside. It is quite a compact battery for the output (fits in one of those boxes with a flat lid).
My car has that system listed on my engineering papers as suitable and passed blue slip that way. This was ony engineered this way last year, just prior to toyfest i think, so is not an old thing.
Cheers

Why don't you do what you did with your surge tank\fuelpump setup? Mount it externally and make a cut out on the hatch area?
I had the same issue as you with the Sigma. Everyone kept saying use a marine box, but RTA says sealed and vented. The only ones I found were the expensive ones like you found. I still haven't got one yet.

Thanks for the comments all.
I cant do what i did with the fuel box setup as i no longer have access to a welder.
Also making a sealed lid for it would be a real PITA.
Same goes for making one out of alu-sheet, would probably end up looking like dogs bollocks.
The tupperware idea is a good one!
Make a sturdy alu/steel base to go inside the box, bolts down through it into the chassis, and tie-down straps or similar (this legal?) to hold the battery in place,
Will take a trip down to ikea this arvo.
