    Cool Re: rwd st185 gt4

planning a street registered drift ready dedicated rwd celica, want to put a toyota 6 in it i dont think a 2jz would fit, so thinking of a cross bred conversion with a series 7 twin turbo cosmo 13B, purely and simply for they are easy to extract big power with less cost as a piston motor, but still unsure on it at this point,

I hope you've got deep pockets and/or good fabriaction skills. The amount of work that went into the GT8 is insane.

If you want a drift hack there are plenty of RWD cars that will do the job nicely.

iv seen 2 in ae85/6s....... various amounts of gas axing involved!

    Thanxs for all replies.

I understand it is going to be a big job, and i am prepared for that, the reason i'm not going for a generic drift machine is cause i own a fibreglass business, modifying car interiors and stereo accsessories such as sub boxes, parcel shelves, door trims etc... and to promote this i would like to create something from left field, me and my business partner are currently working on a nissan PINTARA TRX with a u13 SR20 conversion, and a custom bodykit and boot install that we are making.
therefore i feel that a rwd drift celica yet to be seen will achieve this, and i only ask for reaserch and previous knowledge that one might be able to point me to to better help in any decision making as i can learn from others miss adventures.

make sure you start with a awd gt4 and not a fwd SX celica. will be alot more work converting the fwd. the gt4 awd already has the rear diff and subframe. trans tunnel, correct fuel tank positioning etc.

Yeh but if your going for drift with something like a 13bt then i would hazard a guess that the whole rear of the celica wouldnt be up to the task of handling such power/treatment and would be needing an upgrade.

Why wouldn't it be able to handle the power/treatment?? justen's gt8 is already making 300+atw and he's soon to be shooting for 500atw

That would be 400+rwkw and heading for 500 GT4 subframe but highly modded and uses TRD JZA70 diff/shafts.

    Tough conversion mate, good luck.

I was recently involved in turning a ST185 GT4 into rear wheel drive only. Inside your transmission is a sleeve which can be moved to lock the centre diff. Unfortunately this sleeve becomes the weakest link in the drivetrain and is prone to breakage. This is the part I have circled. The other picture shows the (arrowed) parts locked together by the sleeve.
To overcome the inherent weakness of the sleeve the parts arrowed were welded together. The front drive axles have been discarded and the holes plugged up. I have not driven the car but have been told it that it soon loses traction when the boost comes on.

i was talken 2 a dude at the drags and we were talking about this very subject.
We were talking about the little selector on the 185 box's, i was aware of only normal and fwd mod, but he reckons the other position is a fully locked mode, anyone want to confirm or deny this? he wants basically to put it in the locked position (if one exists) and plug up the holes for rwd only. As a matter of interest he has a group A 185 and isnt interested in forums
