    Default 86 celica questions

    HI,

I'm new to the forum here, and signed up to see if anyone can answer a few questions regarding a 1986 celica SX. I recently brought the car only to find out that it was an auto at some point and converted to a manual (makes me feel kinda stupid not noticing before).

anyways, the first thing i noticed is that the engine mount(s) are absolutely stuffed, well, the front one at least. I am not too concerned about this as i can fix it myself when i get some money for a new mount, but am curious to know if anyone knows a good wreckers in the birsbane area that may have some?

Secondly, it has big wheels on it (17") with the wrong series tyre on it (from what i can tell, as my speedo is out by 10 km/h e.g. 50 k's is really 60 k's). These wheels are also the wrong offset so when cornering at speed the wheels rub the out side of the wheel archers. Does anyone know what the offset and pattern for the celica is? Also, what size the standard tyre is?

next... i have noticed that the oil pressure gauge indicates a low pressure, now from driving other cars (MR2, old deisil landcruiser, exact same model celica...), i would have thought the gauge ran around the middle to higher marks. Has anyone known these gauges to "go" over time? The car still runs fine and the temperature gauge hardly moves, so should i be worried?.

I have some more stuff i would like to ask, but this'll do for now.

if anyone can shed some light on these, i would greatly appreciated. no doubt you'll be seeing more of me on this forum.

    Cheers

i'm pretty sure the offset for the 162 celica is +38 stud pattern is 5x100 PCD

i wouldn't be to worried bout your oil pressure gauge, the one in my old celica had the exact same problem. i just learned to not pay attention to it. you can try swaping the actual unit on the engine to see if that makes a difference, and making sure the wire is connected properly.

engine mounts your probably better off buying brand new either through a store (road and track online had them can get the link to their site if you want) or just go through a toyota parts dealer, i dont remember it being that expensive when i replaced my mounts,

but you are better off getting brand new rather then going to a wreakers, just because the ones from a wreakers might already have the same problem, or be on the verge or breaking as well, at least with new ones you'll have piece of mind. (i think it cost me either $200 - $400 to replace all 4 mounts).

join the ST162 thread if you want, ton's of info in there, and people always willing to help you out with problems and spare parts

As they say in the book, assembly is the reverse of dismantling, but slower cos you forgot where all the bits are

Beer is right. Ignore the oil guage, they can vary a lot in readings.

5x100 is right. Im not 100% on the offset but that sounds about right.

My speedo was out by about 10% too. Ie. at 100, I was going 92ish.. correct tyres, standard wheels, just an 'off' speedo.

ST162 thread is a good point for reference, although being 10 billion pages long, its hard to find what you want. When I had my celica, I found:OzCelica it was a help for a lot of things.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I will give the guys out at road and track a call during the week and see if i can get some mounts.

Do you think it would be better to replace just the front one (the worst one). Or replace them all in one hit. i think there is a bit of movement in the rear one, but the right and left i haven't been able to get a good look as yet.

yeah, speedo's can be a pain, i think its still the tyres on the car atm causing the problem, going to a tyre place tomorrow to see what sorta wheels i can get and for how much, ones with the right offset would also be awesome.

My account has finally been approved for OZ celica, so i'll be checking that out soon.

    cheers

do em all at once, that way the old ones wont bugger the single new one, or even get good condition 2nd hand ones.

    oil - dw about it.

    tyres - 39+ offset 5x100 , max width rim i ever ran was 7.5"
rubber - on my 17's max you can run is 205/40/17
    on my 16's 205/45/16
    on doob's 18's 215/35/18

i had 'lows' with kyb's, was fine. but if you jus have stock shocks with low springs, its useless.

    good luck.

its got replacement OEM monroe shocks in it as far as i know. if i was to get a set of 17's for it (with right offset, tyres etc) would it there still be a chance on it rubbing because of the soft suspension?

    cheers
