With the paint, Aircon, all new genuine seals and engine done, considering the car has less than 180,000kms and NO rust underneath it (or under the back windows), the only rust is in the hatch and under the hatch seal, and there are only 2 areas of damage from minor incidents, plus the interior is generally quite nice, I would expect to insure it for around the $10k mark. It would definitely cost a lot more than this to pay somebody to build it etc, and it will probably cost me a few k more just in parts/machine work (plus countless hours of labour) I would consider this selling myself short, but would also consider it about what somebody might reasonably expect to pay for it. The car will be built to be fully daily driveable, yet still very spirited, so a potential buyer need not be a boy racer, but that group of people would not be excluded by poor performance.

So yeah, in a realistic fashion, I would consider $10k to $11k to be a reasonable insured value. Would you agree with that Rod??

You should have no trouble at all insuring it for that.

Shannons recognise the increasing value of the Classic Celicas, add a decent wheel and tyre package to what you described and $10 - $14k is not unreasonable - Give it a brake & suspension upgrade while your under it and $14 - $16k is once again a reasonable figure.

I intend on upgrading the front brakes to RT133 struts and callipers (already on it) with either RA60 or Tarago (looking at DBA catalogue for perfect vented disk) disks. Rear I am considering RT142 Avante Disks.

Wheels are 14 by 6 Globe Bathurst rims, some minor outer rim damage, would look generally good with a cleanup, but nothing spectacular. Front tyres will be Michelin XM-1 Plus's and rears are Kumho PowerMax's. I dont think that wheel/tyre combo would increase its value by much, but the brake upgrade might. Will have to revise my figure carefully, as the more I insure it for, the less poorly off I shall be in the event of an unforseen incident.

The wheel and Tyre combo can be a big thing, If you lucky you could swap the Bathurst globes for a 6pack of coke where as a good set of billet or 3 piece rims with tyres will set you back over $3k. Its something your insurance deffinatly needs to reflect.

For my policy I emailed them a detailed and itemised list of all the bits so there is no confussion if I ever need to claim. I included a series of detailed photo's so again nothing is a debateable point. It was basically a copy and paste of my members rides 1st post with photo's. I have to say I have always found shannons fantastic to deal with. My only drama was vehicle storage requirements.

Yeah, I am in the process of putting together a proposal for approval by the minister of war and finance to put a rollerdoor on our patio. She wants to leave it till we put in the new fence, but I think it is more critical than that.

I understand that a good set of rims will cost/be worth a lot more, but the Globes are what I have, and they are staying on there. The agreed replacement value of the rims with Shannons is currently around $500. I really need to get in and clean/polish them!! I will probably paint the centres at the same time as painting the car, so they match.

Owen, the biggest problem is you are trying to insure a 30 year old car and put an agreed valve on it which is easy to do if you want to pay the premiums. Doing what Rod has done only covers his back side because if something happens he and his insurers have photo proof and hopefully there are no come backs but with all insurance companies if they can get out of paying they will find little loop holes.

Maybe you could get an umbrella policy which means all yours cars are insured but as you can only drive one car at a time that car is insured and some insurance companies do look at that that way. I think Shannons do offer it.
The other thing is that they might limit you on the usage of the car, just like club reg cars.

Realisticly thou, if you do have an agreeded valve and make a claim and they think it is only worth half that you are going to have a big fight on your hands to get the rest of the monies out of them.
These days Shannons and the other companies that insure older cars really don't expect them to be daily drivers because of the risk of accidents. Think about it, l took the front off my VY ute and it cost $8000 to fix, if the air bags had gone off to, it was another $3k on to the bill. What would it cost to fix a 28 if you the same thing happened and yes l know you don't have air bags in your 28 and as they are paying the bill they will want it fixed properly no back yarders.

In my case, I have basically looked at the worst possible event that could happen, and assuming it was repairable put a figure to that effect. If the car is a write off in an acco, there is a chance that i can salvage some of the rarer parts. the worst possible case is if the car is stolen and burnt out, in which case I lose everything. and it is hard to put a $ figure on replacing it. So the other worst cases are:
Major front end - Where I would probably salvage the interior and doors back
Major rear end - where I could salvage the rear seats forward.
Major side impact - loss of 1/2 the interior, but possibly salvage engine
Hail or violation of paint - respray required

All in all I figure the cost of finding a shell and getting it painted + some odds and ends is what I put on the Celica. Beyond that I'd be importing one from Japan as a replacement in the case of total loss.

    Cheers
