Default 1jz Thermostat same as Startlet? Operating temp???

A while back when I was looking for a replacement thermostat for my 1jz, I went to my local Repco to get one, and of course they didn't have a listing for any 1jz powered vehicles, the bloke measure the old one I had removed from the engine, noted the temp , and searched the (tridon i think ) catalogue for a match and came up with one for a Echo , I cannot remmeber the part number, it was a 82C open thermostat.
Can any confirm that they are the same part? as I have some concerns over the cooling system and I have twin VT thermofans (and yes they booth draw air throught the rad ) trigger by a TSF148 thermo fan switch at 95C on 90 off (located in the standard dash guage sender position and aftermarket guage mounted next to it), with the car stationary it sit between 95 and 98 booth at idle and 2000rpm, as a result the thermos are constantly running. Is this the correct operating temp for a 1JZ? is the thermostat the correct temp range? could it be cause a flow restriction? is the thermo fan switch the correct range? as the car is currently unregistered and I live on the main highway through town testing at speed is limited.

    Any suguestions?Ideas?

Toyota part numbers from the EPC are, from jzz30 with 1jz-gte

    Part number Production date
    90916-03092 9105-9109
    SUBS 90916-03093 9109-0012

Which when x ref in the catalog pulls up the 1NZ-FE and 2NZ-FE motors used in NCP10/13 Echo

Temps stated are 82-95 for this part number.

The maximum I've seen in mine is 92DegC. I was trying to get it to its max 'cause the tuner had said it was running hot on the dyno and that I should check what the max is that I see on the street. I'd also be very interested to hear what other people's 1JZs run at to give me a target when dropping the water and oil temps.

Mine runs at around 92-98C, depends on how hot it is outside (brand new radiator, but with 2 trans coolers on it). I have a Tridon 97C on 92C off temp switch, and the bastard is pretty much on all the time once it is warmed up. In winter I'd say it would be fine. On a cool morning with little stop-start driving it doesn't come on at all on the way to work.
On a hot day I've seen it get as high as 102C even with the fans running.

A 100C on switch would be ideal, but Tridon don't make one that fits the top radiator hose adaptor.
I think the 1JZs use an 82C thermostat. You could get a slightly colder TRD one as a workaround, this is what I intend to do. I think the TRD one is 77C or something.

I'm going to try a 3 stage plan to bring my water temp down to @ 85 and my oil temp down to 90. The first stage is increase air flow to the engine bay and oil cooler by fitting a slim line plate (already ordered), ducting through the radiator support panel and grill and moving the oil cooler forward and angling it.
Stage 2 will be the TRD thermostat and a motorbike thermo fan on the oil cooler.
Stage 3 will be (and I hope it doesn't come to this) 2 Hilux turbo deisel scoops either side at the front and vents at the back of the bonnet.
I have the part numbers for the TRD thermostat but my laptop is stuffed so I can't post them.

FYI for 1J/2J owners, ive found that tridon have a cheap low temp thermostat that you can use as a replacement. Costs about $30 and this one is a 77°. You can also get lower and higher temps as well.

the one on the right is the stock one yeah? the other one looks substancially smaller opening, would this aid or hinder cooling?

when i put it in it actually stayed cooler for longer. It used to run at around 86°-89° instead of the normal 92°.

notice that the stocker on the right, has a small hole.. 2-3mm, which allows small flow through tthe thermostat at all times.. compared to the crappy one at left

also note that with the orientation of the little metal dangly bit thru hole... the stock one will push so that the big part goes up.. and there can still be a bit of flow past the crushed bit.
the on eat left, with the blob goes up.. will seal (kinda)...

might be an idea to drill a hole in the new thermostat? to give more even temps during startup etc... (ie not hysteresis)

open your eyes , bottom right on the new one.

Is does look like the dangly bit orientation is reversed tho...

The after market one has a smaller openning then the standard one. In therory, if the TRD one is the same size as the standard one it would cool better because of less restiction (better flow).

thanks 1Jz-Lux thats what I was thinking, so with the temperature range my engine is running at is there a problem or is it within normal operating range?
