If the calipers only have pistons on one side of them then they should have two shafts that allow the caliper to slide on them so that when the pistons are forced out in braking, the caliper centers itself providing even wear on the pads. If these shafts are dirty then they can stop the brake caliper working properly and increase wear on the pad in contact while the other one will either not wear at all or just not as much.
Does it make any noises when just rolling? what about when you jack it up and spin the wheel? Is the pad with the most wear being pulled away from the rotor when the brakes arent applied? If this is the case then the spring that holds the pads back could be worn, dirty, or not installed correctly.
Its not one of the south african built corollas is it? These have had braking problems so i have heard.
