    Default 7MGTE Timing

    Anyone successfully timed a 7MGTE ?

I remember having these issues a few years ago, but it wasn't on my car, so I didn't worry about it.

Basically, with the CAS on tooth 'X', I can adjust the timing from say -25, but only to 5 BTDC, not all the way to 10 or 12.
And then with the CAS advanced one tooth, it can be adjusted all the way up to say 50deg, but the furthest I can bring it down is about 20deg.

I can't get it to read 10deg while the bolt holds the CAS in. Pull the bolt out and adjust it and I can get 10deg, but that doesn't help me.

TE1 and E1 were bridged, and I was using plug #6, which in theory should be the same as plug #1, its just a billion times easier to get to.

    Ideas ?

    Thats odd...

I've never had an Issue timing mine, I use 6 as well...

Are you sure the timing belt is installed correctly? you made sure its at TDC when you install the CAS?

The link should help you, although im sure you've been there before...

Yeah, went through the TSRM just before posting the thread, making sure it was 10deg BTDC.

Exhaust cam being a tooth out is a possibility, I'll check that when I'm home next.
It was checked a while back while the covers were off though, and it was definitely spot on.
Could have slipped though I guess.

Has the balancer slipped? The timing might be right but the balancer marks will have moved throwing you off.

If its happened, its managed to happen in the last 60km of driving.

All the marks lined up perfectly when it was on the engine stand.

sounds like your exhaust cam could be out a tooth like you said. I had a VL commodore come into work with the same problem.

    Good luck with it.

Yeah same here, I had no problem with setting the timing. I put it back together exactly as it came apart, but I did check it running and it all lined up perfectly. Slipping a tooth wouldn't be impossible in that length of travel. Incicdentally I too had a VL that I couldn't set.. belt had jumped about three teeth.

hmm, not really contributing anything here but for the sake of agreeing,
    it sounds like either -

exhaust wheel is out by a tooth - most likely
harmonic balancer has twisted (though i can't remember if the timing mark is on the fixed part of the balancer or the rubber mounted section) - seems a little unlikey
timing belt has stretched (new belt?) - seems unlikely
or perhaps the CAS is faulty, ie. the trigger wheel or the drive gear has shifted, both of which seem unlikely.

Let us know what you find.

I've just verified that the cams are correctly aligned, and I'm 99% sure that the crank pulley hasn't slipped (kinda hard to be exact on this though).

I'm gonna check the cam timing while running now, see if belt stretch is the cause (seems unlikely at idle)

Cam timing with the engine runnings puts the cams about 2.5deg out from the crank.
I tightened the timing belt a bit (looks new btw, no signs of cracking), so that should help that.

Still only reading 5-6deg at full extension of the CAS though.

Turns out the CAS was 180deg out

    I thought it was symmetrical.
