The oil flows through the outside first ( the small holes ) & back out through the centre hole, That way there is more surface area on the outside of the filter element to filter the oil & wont clog up as quickly either ...
Hey guys,
Iam hooking up a oil cooler in one my Sprinters.
My question is: Which way does the oil flow through the oil filter? ie. Does the oil go INTO the filter through the middle hole or is that the exit (back to the engine) hole?
Why i ask, is that iam thinking of mounting the oil cooler SIDE ON, and i dont want the oil working against gravity, ie Pushing up the cooler......
Any words of advice?
thanks

if your putting the cooler on its side then make sure you have the outlet at the top, (so not the way you want to run it)Originally Posted by JoJo
dont worry about gravity as it wont affect shit, the main thing you want to aviod is airlocks.
there have been countless times ive mentioned to a customer to change the way (somebody else) mounted the cooler (on a $200k+ racecar) and it wasn't until the 3rd set of bottom end bearings shat themselves that it was rectified and guess what its just done a full season with no problems.
other than that lexsmaz is correct with the flow and just make sure you run decent qualiy fittings and hoses.

no, side on is FINE, just mount the OUTLET of the cooler at the TOP

by OUTLET he means where the oil comes OUT of the cooler, this is so it fills up with oil and pushes any air out the top, as opposed to the oil going in the top and the air trying to go up too.
im not sure it can be much clearer!
thanks mate

no prob, roughly where are you planning on putting it?
i wasn;t sure on the direction, so i had a look and i agree it goes IN the fliter via the holes on the outside, and OUT of the filter via the big screw hole on the inside.
have a look at this
