True, 1G's are tough engines .... if there is a obvious noise coming outta the head/block then u know its day has ended
Well, if it helps, I got a death rattle one day too.
It turned out, the fly wheel bolts had come loose, and the flywheel was pivoting on the back of the crank. Pull off, clean up and bolt back on again, problem fixed.
However, I think I was lucky.
When my engine went bye byes, I didn't even know it. It didnt' make any different noises or anything.
So my experience says, when a 1g actually DOES make noise and start to complain, it's WELL gone. It's not just going to take some superglue to fix it.

I was thinking when I started reading, sounds like a clutch/flywheel issue.
Would also explain why the damn car won't move.
guys, thanks very much for ur replies, its given me a heap of different things i can check before jumping into getting a new motor (if needed, i know everyone says to take it to a mechanic etc but i just cant afford to do it..) so all the feedback is awesome. from the last few posts it is starting to confirm my previous thoughts about it having had its day.since i need to take the box off to get the motor out, will check out clutch/flywheel for destruction or loose shit. MAYBE its that and just shitting leads (one can hope) but at least i know which way im headed.
many thanks guys, have a good christmas!!
Leads don't make your engine rattle. Consensus is flywheel or bottom end, flywheel is way more work to check first, drop the oil in a clean container and look for shinny shit in it, if yes, bearinsg are gone, if no, then move onto box, I'm sure you can afford $20 worth of oil.

has anyone considered it may have spat a shim? they make some nice noises when they do that... and have this desire to not do shit, has something to do with a valve or two being constantly shut i guess...
