Question Fixing roof lining in TA22

    HI Guys ,
Just wondering how to fix rips in the roof lining.
Now the lining is actually out of the car, can I simply 'patch' it up on the backside using, cement goo glue from a bike tube repair kit and strips of some other fabric? I suppose like fixing a hole in a rubber dingue?

If its out anyways id be inclined to replace the whole thing. Clark rubber sell a soft material covered foam that is perfect for the job.

You shouldnt need a sewing machine as nothing needs to be sewn iirc. Not sure on the cost but it wasnt to expensive from what i remember. We used it to redo the roof lining in a friends VN commodore a few years back as the original lining had sagged.

It comes in a big sheet but is probably cut to size. From there we just lay it on the original roof lining, traced around and cut to size, glued it to the cardboard thingy, then reinstalled and job done. We then partied into the night marvelling at our recent accomplishment.

With the lining, it has meatl bars which prop the roof up so maybe I can glue it to the original one, which would fix up the rips then cut to shape. What kind of glue did you end up using?

It was some spray on glue in a can. Not exactly sure of the brand or name of it but clark probably sell it and if not then somewhere like kmart or big w would.

The 22 doesnt have a cardboard covered lining does it?

Dude it's not a card, it's old school bars and sewn material, you can patch it with contact adhesive and material from behind. Don't use rubber, it'll only stretch and you'll see it when you refit the lining. With a normal vinyl you won't need and industrial machine, but when you make the folds to slide the bars into, glue it as well. Let it go off then sew. Use a longish (5-8mm) straight stitch in two rows if possible (length between the bar and the surface of the lining will dictate this), one near the bar, one to run the line on the surface (make this as straight as possible since you'll see it), run a zig zag between the two (ideally will be just within the straight stitches) not too tight a tension. Fishing line works well. It's flexible enough to run through the machine (don't put to much on the bobbin).

Dave, now you have the lining out! best to replace it all. The cloth over the metal hangers, will be faily rotten, and will soon start to fall apart. I have found that a "sun block" curtain backing has a very lengthy life in the roof of Celica's, and is easily used to replace the hangers hoops. You could possibly get away with using a decent household sewing machine, as each stitch line will only have to penetrate 2 layers of roofing material, and 2 layers of the hoop material..

    cheers Chuck.
