Default Modifying GZE pistons for SilverTop Block

maybe its just me....... i could not find anything on the net about this in the last half an hour so i come to the pro's for answers.....

well got the bottom end of the block together today and had a HUGE grin on my face that was until i tried to turn the bugger over got a 180 and then CLUNK, something hit something and no movement continued in that direction, so i spin the other way, realizing that i had spun counter clockwise and that was wrong, so 180 and then CLUNK, interference again, like an idiot i force it. BAD IDEA. piston skirt had hit oil squirter (on #1 and #4) and now i am in need of two new oil squirters (I know, GOOD LUCK). At any rate.... should i need to modify the pistons? I'm not sure if they are early or late model pistons(i am going to find out though), and i am using a set of Spool rods. Crank and block are S/T.

Boy oh boy, I think i got myself into a world of hurt with this little fudge up. The search begins.

    Thanks in advance.

Yer, it could possibly be the pistons you have, I beleive others have a cut out or something to do with the oil squirters not fowling.

Oil squirters are easy enought to come by. Any later block will have some. Find someone in your area who has blown a motor...

my area is Canada and they are not so easy to come by. If you or anyone else can source some i would gladly pay and offer up what i can for a finders fee.

so for modifying these should i just carve in a notch or should i take out a half moon?

    Nozzle, sub assy oil #s 1, 2, and 4 15708-16010. #3 15708-16020.

Try a dealer see if he can get it. If not try any US dealer( http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...?siteid=213747 = Champion Toyota, one of the largest in the USA ).

IF you also need the check valve/mounting bolt that would be 15703-16010

if you had got 8.9:1 c/r gze pistons the oil squirter cut out would have already been there.

i've rebuilt a ST with the 20v head for a friend useing the 8.0:1 c/r gze pistons for a 4agte project and came across the same problem. instead of cutting a notch into each piston (you would wanna make sure you take the exact same amount of meat out??, notch either side of piston for balance??), i just trimmed the oil squirter nozzle doobie back so it cleared the piston skirt.
yeah sure that means it didnt squirt oil up under the pistons anymore, but i'm still not convinved the idea is a necessity in a high performance engine anyways, HEAPS of high hp 4age/gze/gte engines out there with-out oil squirters.

yah, i was thinking that i might have to make the damn things symmetrical for balance.

can i get away with cutting the squirters down?, i am using aftermarket rods that do not have a hole for oil in them. how much lubrication will i get onto the cylinder walls, will it be sufficient to keep the thing for seizing up?

I wouldnt be cutting the squirters down.....Not if you plan on making decent hp anyhow.

Every bit of lubrication counts if you want to push a 4a and some sort of useable life from it.

Id be filing/ grinding the notches in the pistons and then balancing.
As for the spol rods not having a lubrication hole Dont they put a hole into them on the similar carillo rods for formula atlantic.

This is what id do anyhow.

I figure you have come this far and llike i said before ....it looks like you have a decent motor coming together.......
    Dont skimp out now !

the thing that gets me the most is this is the first i have head of such an issue, i suppose its easier to find information once you know a problem exists though.

im thinking i might just replace the squirters and get some new pistons.

no need to get new pistons, just notch yours
its what you do to the 8:1 pistons
dont need to balance, they go up and down, not round and round.
dont need to make much of a cut

yeah, time and economics are on the side of you Mr Revhead. It sucks that you cant get the squirters in and out without removing the crank, otherwise i could move forward. I just ordered a full set of replacements from champion toyota. time to break out the die grinder.
