    Default tail shaft length

    Hi happy toymodders
Im about to put my tailshaft back in my 1g ra23 for the first time and i was wondering how much free play i should have between the the spline on the shaft and the output on the gear box. At the moment its hard up against the back of the box so if i hit a serious bump ill probally push the engine through the radiator, so what clearance would you suggest?
i dont doubt its already been said somewhere but after 15 or so threads i havnt been able to track it down.

Set it up as per factory would be my suggestion

Generally the factory arrangement is the end of the gearbox yoke (near the first uni) level with the end of the dust cover on the gearbox.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the furthest forward that the shaft moves would be when the wheels are nearing the top of their travel no? So you could in theory have the car on a hoist for example and jack the rear wheels into the guards until the shaft moves forward no more and then set it up accordingly. I know that's no accessible for everyone, you can do it on jack stands (carefully of course).

What we did when we did a gearbox conversion on a Datsun was to raise the front of the car a bit so that there was weight on the rear and then we got people to sit in the back as extra. That allowed me to check the movement in the tailshaft.

    funktatstic.
Ive already checked it for linear movement and it only moves forward about 1cm between static load on the suspension and bottoming out, so ill spose ill cut it down about 15mm

ideally you should have 20mm+ between where the shaft runs at ride and completely bottomed out in the back of the box.

did you get a custom shaft? if so they should have taken this into consideration.

the hilux nose is longer than the T series as well as the rewelded mounts may have the diff sitting slightly fore/aft of factory.

    cheers

I didnt end up going hilux, just to much ovlov love in my body!
im still running the standard tail shaft with original T rear end at the moment, while i get my brakes and front end sorted(OR TILL IT EXPLODES) at which point the volvo diff is going in with a h/duty 3" drive shaft.
