    Default aw11 radiator

Hey all i picked up a average condition aw11 the other day and it has been playing up in the cooling area. First off the water pump went which i replaced now i think that radiator is gone as it wont drain properly and when driving the heat temp goes through the roof rather quickly. just wondering where i could get a new radiator for one or a aftermarket one from.

have you tried removing the radiator and giving it a good flush out? (just a radiator flush out in a bottle will not do!). that's the first step i sugest you follow, removal of the radiator is very simple. i've done it on all 3 of my aw11's, and was amazed in the gunk i got out of it with the simple use of a garden hose.
once you've done that and put in the new thermastat you bought down at the auto store (or toyota is you really want, i'm sure some of the more anal owners can provide you with a part number ), follow some coolant system 'bleeding' procedures. http://gb.detonated.org/mr2coolant/
you cannot just refill the coolant system and drive like a lot of front engined cars.

best of luck and enjoy part of motoring histories finest sports car!

Well yeah i did that got a bit of stuff out but i think the radiator hose down near the heater is totally blocked as i ran the hose water through there and it just backed up to where i was filling it.

did you have the heater turned to hot? even with a completely blocked heater matrix the car will not overheat.

so you have pulled the radiator out of the car and flushed it? how much shite did you get out?

how did you go with the thermastat? get a new one in?

SARD makes an aftermarket radiator for the AW11 but they are pricey. Any others anyone knows about? I have been thinking about upgrading my entire cooling system.

since you are in the US there are damn cheap ones available to you. Unfortunately they refuse to send them OS to the kind folk over here. The standard cooling system is pretty good due to the sheer volume it carries, but new bits are always better than the old rusted ones

the stock cooling system is already over engineered, unless it is all old and rusty there is no need to 'upgrade'.

Well back to the point i changed the thermostat as well she ran well for about 5 mins then the head gaskit blew so i am guessing that it was on the way out the entire time.
