Default 180 Degree temps and driving..

I purchased a RA60 a fair few months ago.. We took it rallying, it did ok but the fan belt snapped off. Repalced that and drove it home. It sat at a friends house for around 4 months.

Recently I have brought it home to use as a daily. Repalced the waterpump as it shat intself due to the clutch fan being seized, which was also holding the engine back from reving cleanly.

Still having problems and have suspected the radiator. I thought I would pull the thermostat out for now as I do need it to drive as my AE86 is just too loud to drive on the street. Temps would usually sit at 92deg but somtimes reach 110deg.

So this morning driving to work with no thermostat, temps just kept going up. Im sure it reached something to about 170-180deg as it just went all the way around till it hit the stop before 40deg.

You might think I'm stupid for not pulling over and letting it cool down or what not. It's a cheap run around car, I wasn't going to pull over on the freeway just to not be able to start the car untill it was fully cooled down, yet to heat up again 10mins later.

The thing is, it kept driving perfectly. It didn't start to die in anyway, kept idle and when I got into work, it would still crank over.

Anyway, the reason I really posted this was to find out what someone would do to replace this motor/radiator economically and cheaply. No 1G fitments.

    Do I replace it with a 18R? 21R ? 22RE?

If I do, where could I find one besides from another working/registered car.

Do I pull the head of the 21R and repalce the gasket and have the radiator roded (suprisingly it didnt explode)

Any Ideas and even abuse is appreciated

I think Wilo is right, also the obvious RA65. SOME Hilux came with 22RE but most are Carbi.

18R = heat, non-cross-flow, iron head (weight) and general tractor-like behaviour.

if you got the whole motor hot, then rings are also probably stuffed - so an entire motor would make sense... and upgrading from carbi to EFI would also be a good thing (as in less fuel use). Fuel tank and lines from MA61 or RT142 also required, engine from an EFI Corona (RT142?), you'll be able to re-use clutch/flywheel from existing motor so an auto-gearboxed-doner wont be a problem.

You need to have a thermostat, it restricts the water flow a little and gives the water time to absorb the heat build up in the engine. The water will flow too fast to absorb the engine heat if one is not fitted.
If you are concerned about the radiator and live north of the river try LEOs radiators in Wangara. they are fairly cheap and do good work.

if the motor is fine, don't replace it... from what you've said, doesn't sound like u've done a HG? if it still runs fine.. leave it be.. check under oil cap and in radiator for any water oil / cappucino mix...

and if SOR, i recommend Nat-rads for a radiator jobbie.. i've done all my radiator jobs for under 400 bucks including all new hoses, thermostat, clamps, brand spanking new radiator with warranty...

afaik the stock factory gauge reads 120 or 140 degrees only , as beyond that most engines just let go and die? aftermarket jobbie?

edit : when u said 92 to 110... i assumed celsius because my car sits between 82 and 94 degrees celsius, but i have a 91 deg thermostat.

It was a Speco gauge.. its broken now from winding itself all teh way around, but at the same time the stock gauge was on red for a long time

Got home and the radiator was hissing from the cap, sounded like someone was whistling forever... Ripped the radiator out this morning to take to Natrad. Could see it was blocked fucking well good. The core was damaged down the bottom of the rad. some fins missing. the guy would not rod it for me so I've gone and bought a new one for $280. Will get it this arvo and find out tomorrow what hte verdict is. The engine suprisingly seems to be holding together fine hahahah.. Truck power for sure. Havent seen much in the cap or coolant out the exhaust.. These truck engines are well good

The true test is when I put the radiator in, we will see what happens then. If all comes to worse. Im doing a SR20DET conversion on AE86 in the coming weeks so I'll just drop my 4age into it
