GATES timing belt (1/2 price of genuine)
    use NGK spark plugs,
water pump....what ever GMB brand are average but cheap,
use toyota RED coolant (if theres green shit in there, FLUSH it clear, then fill with red)

just go to repco they'll have evertything you need.

you might have trouble finding a 20V waterpump at repco.

They're not that expensive genuine from toyota and come with all the gaskets etc and the rear housing too.

Gates actually list the AE111 20V belt now so you dont have to use the BMW gates belt.

edit: Another thought is that you'll definately need a new hydraulic timing belt tensioner and idler pulley, might aswell replace the thermostat, cam and crank seals while it's all apart too.

    as above. stressing the tensioner.
i would use all genuine parts..... but im biased
but with a genuine pump you at least get all the seals/gaskets.
while doing the water pump i recommend doing the short hose mmediatly behind it.

any tips on getting a blacktop thermostat / gasket while we're at it?

I havn't been able to track one down in the past. I'm guessing a genuine one would be the best option, but I'm suspecting there'd be an aus delivered engine with same one.

No need to go genuine for the thermostat now, I've found the Tridon one that fits and also the Dayco one
    Tridon part # TT281-180
Tridon gasket part # TTG34 (its the rubber ring that stretches around it)

    Dayco part number DT21A-BP
I brought my housing in to repco, wacked it in, and it fitted perfectly
it was $32 at repco, I'm curious how much it would be from toyota?

pretty much every other 4a from 4ac to silvertop uses the smaller thermostat TT214-180.

But the blacktop uses the bigger diameter one (56mm) also used in 2ZZGEs 1ZZFEs, late V6 camrys etc. They are all rated at 82 deg C

    well that'd suck

but I know the earlier style smaller ones are more like $15, sure your not talking about the geniune thermostat for the earlier 4As?

I'm talking about the thermostat for a blacktop, replaced one with a genuine item on my motor when I did the cam belt, tensioner, ram, cam seals, waterpump etc.
