    Default 2T-G starting problem

Hi guys, I'm having starting problems with my 2T-G, doesn't matter if it's cold start or even few hours after the engine is shut down. I have to crank lots of times in order for it to start, if I'm lucky it starts, but most of the time I end up with having the starter motor burnt or flat battery and the engine still not started. My engine has some upgrade though:

    High compression piston 88.5mm
    NGK BP8ES cold spark plugs
    Twin Weber 45 dcoe
310 degree intake and exhaust cam
    Large intake and exhaust valves
    Ported and polished head

    standard 2T-GEU electronic distributor
    standard 2T-GEU coil & igniter

What could be the problem, this starting problem still persist even after I have primed the carburetor few times with the accelerator pedals before I start, or even with the choke open. What could be the problem. Hope you guys could help. Thank You.

    Regards
    Raj

    Raj.

All asuming there is little or nothing wrong with the Webers.

After cranking for a while, before it does start, check the four plugs. How do they look?

Dry means no fuel what so ever.

Wet and bores smell of fuel, then it is flooding. Jet size issues.

Do the Weber pump jets work?

A retarded ignition timing will make it very hard to start and would be flooding if the carbs are good. Static ignition timing should be at least 10 BTDC #1. It could be timed to the wrong crank pulley mark.

A retarded intake cam can cause starting issues.

Remove a plug and attach the lead and set the plug on the rocker cover. Run the starter and check to see if the plug fires.

The motor should fire cold after two or three pumps of the throttle and baby taps until it settles then it should be warmed up for a minute or two at 1200 then it should idle without using the starter (choke) system.

    Regards

Hi Rodger, thank you once more for your help, I definitely smell fuel in the bores after a couple of times priming the carb while starting, but I want to try your suggestion about the distributor timing advance and camshaft timing, I'll try it and let you know. Thank You once again.

How's it start when pushed? Engines with poor ignition systems usually push start real well when their starter isn't stealing current from the ign.

Hi guys, I tried with rodger's suggestion to advance the distributor, it started after a few cranks, but the timimg now seems to be higher but enough to get me to my mechanic to have a look. Thanks for the advise guys, and please do give your views more.

    Hi Raj,
I just went through the same process with my 2TG running Dellorto DHLA40s.

    1. I needed hotter plugs, colder plugs were constantly fouling and the engine was misfiring, I am using Bosch WR9DCX+ plugs. Check your plugs as Rodger said. If they are black and carbon fouled, try hotter plugs.

    2. I upgraded the 2TG points dizzy to an electronic ignitor module. This ignition system is much better than the standard points ignitor. As far as I'm aware the 2TGEU also had a points dizzy?? There is a conversion thread in these forums somewhere to convert to the electronic dizzy. My electronic doobywhatsits came from my 3T.

    3. Install a low pressure adjustable fuel reg. I had issues with the mechanical fuel pump supplying too much pressure to the needle and seat valve in the float assembly, causing the carbs to flood.

    4. Check for any vacuum leaks and ensure the PCV system is working properly. I had to replace the vacuum advance diaphragm & the little PCV valve near the intake manifold was ceased, causing excessive blow-by.

I went through all these steps and now I have a very happy 2TG that once was a very sad one

    Cheers, Jess

Thank you very much for all your advise, I have also find out that my idle mixture screw was turned out too much, so referred weber manual and started with 3/4 turn and went to one turn and the starting was fine, but still I think I'm just getting it by trial and error and I want a surefire way.

    Regards
    Raj
