last time i heard your 'rolla (queen mary falls cruise) it sounded like all the shims were split... sure do hope it's better then that now...


on another side note... what's the most likely cause of noise from the top end if an engine has been left sitting for ages... i remembre hearing a noise the last time i started my 1G (over a year ago) sounded not unlike timing chain noise...

the cams were worn out, no ramps on them, so the valves were slapping back (this was the suggestion made by a performance workshop) and yes, they were worn out, swapped cams and got the same issue.
valve clearances were right, i think the valve springs were knackered.

plus, i had 3 thrust washers in the sump, so it may have been the crank moving back and forward.

with the lack of a timing chain its valve train noise, either no oil up there, or somethings not moving properly/out of adjustment. id check your clearances and oil flow and make sure oil is getting around everywhere.

even with all the nasty noises i was able to easily keep up with that 32, go the kesev

lol... my 1G could keep up with that too... then he got it tuned... now the '20 is out, and a RB25 is going in... meanwhile, my 1G is still collecting cobwebs...

are you looking at buying new shims from toyota?
there is a company that does them much cheaper, been posted on the forums a couple of times.

yeh i noticed that, toyota want 15 bucks a shim. And 12 is my mates price...thats shocking.

apparently coventries can get em at 1.10 a shim but dont keep em in stock. &$#@ !!!!

who is this mysterious coventries?
at that price id buy 2 of each from 2.3 to 2.9 then you should have enough for anything
when i got mine from toyota. not 2 were the same price, they ranged from 8 to 17 dollars...go figure :S

well, the problem is with out coventries over here is....the bastards keep everything over east. so we've got to measure everythig up exactly and then wait a week for it ito get in.

they are like Repco but specialize more in spare parts than retail but they are just gettin into retail crap (i work for Repco). Coventrys said they could get me in Crow Cam shims for (like ez said) $1.10 each plus the 15 bucks for postage so im thinking i might just go with them and just replace all the bloody things

yes that would be them they also deal with genuine holden and ford parts (for those who need them)

anyways can anyone answer me this qustion...

whats the standard gap between the camshaft and the shim?
