Default 2zz celica engine up or down to take out?

Hey guys quick question, which way would ya normally take the engine and gearbox out of a 2zz celica? up or down? Looks like a few things might foul no matter which way it goes.
Anyone done it or got any pointers?

    Cheers

    Definately out the bottom

jack it up (or on hoist) and undo all the subframe bolts and braces and it will just drop out the bottom easy

Leave everything on motor and g box attached to the subframe (mounts etc) and drop the whole lot on 4 axle stands then raise the hoist(assuming you have one)
Then remove motor and gbox from subframe

Seemed easier but was it? I would think down the thru the bottom like most FWD cars.

how hard was it out the top mate?
Seeing though you have actually done it your opinion would be awesome!!

I realise the normal way for FWD is usually out the bottom, just looking at this one i had second thoughts.
And yeah i got a hoist so thats no issue.

What are the things that look like they will hit bringing it out at the bottom? Is the stuff removable or just looks easier to go up the top?

only had it happen one way and considering 2jzhilux has done it both ways he's got the experience of both so i cant comment on going out the bottom so if he is saying out the bottom is easier then it is ..... well depends on whether u trust him or not

    LOL

Too many people confusing 1st gear with 3rd gear on downchange gearbox and engine=bang

A plus of doing it from the top though is you can still push the car around easily with motor and box out (subframe still in) so the cars not holding up a hoist

At the end of the day do what ever way youre comfortable with

I like the idea of not having to undo all the subframe
Not that it is that hard just annoying hehe

going down looks like exhaust manifold may foul rack, although not if subframe comes out.

Going up looks like g.box might be tight past the chassis rail and also mounts might be a drama with firewall and or front radiator support doovey.

2jzhilux is it possible to go down without removing subframe? and going up any suggestions before i tried it? IE anything inparticular to remove?

ooh one more question, driveshafts?? do the just pull out of gearbox with a bit of persuasion or is there another method? what the hell is that massive circlip looking thing for on passengers side shaft?

    Cheers

Get rid of all the plastic covers
Leave the rack bolted to the subframe, just undo the steering shaft where it comes out the body (12mm bolt)
and both nuts at the tie rod ends (17mm)
Be careful not to turn the steering shaft when disconnected and make sure it goes back in the same spline or the airbag spiral cable can snap(just lock the steering once its disconnected)
Disconnect power steering hoses from the subframe and separate from the body

Undo lower control arms(3 x 17mm both sides)and front strut bolts (half way down the strut)(22mm i think)
Disconnect engine wiring harness from the inside of the car and pull it through the firewall
Driveshafts will just knock out with a punch /lever on the inner driveshaft housing
Not sure what big circlip you are talking about but if its the one that is in the engine mount that the driveshaft goes through just get a screwdriver and flick it out and then the driveshaft will just slide out(if this isnt the one post a pic )
Once everything is disconnected from the car or subframe
drop the car down to axle stand height and support the subframe with axle stands so its stable
Undo the subframe bolts and then raise the hoist slowly checking that nothing is still attached .

If you get stuck on anything just send me a pm

It is pretty straight forward though so you should be fine
