Counting the 5th gear ratio is probably the best way of doing it... its not that difficult.
Switching the shifter over isnt difficult either.
Can just a be a little fiddly the first time you do it.
hey guys and gals
was swapping my gearbox in my car yesterday, i think i have a W57 and it has a mid mounted shifter,
the new box is out of a GX81 and is more rear mounted,
is there any way i can tell if it is a 58 or 57 with out counting the 5th gear ratio?

If you still have access to the vin plate of the vehicle the box is from that will tell you which gearbox it had.

Its a w57 100 %
it should be a very rear most shifter and a steel sandwich plate.
I have one i imported 17 years ago with like 30000klm on it
Dave
oh no i dont have that,
i was wondering if it were like XYs where if it were manual it would be a top loader, nothing more nothing less,
but im guessing the GX81 came out with more than just the W58

1980RIP NATHAN BRETT DEAN2007,
Hi guys, sorry to hijack the thread but still on topic (relatively) -
I have what is either a W55 or W57 with about 100,000k's on it in my garage from an import celica with a 22RE bellhousing. It has the rear-most selector. My RA23 has what I believe to be a W55 (it has a very short overdrive) with what I think is a mid position selector. The selector sits slightly too forward in the car at the moment with the w55 whereby it ever-so-slightly fouls the console which makes it impossible to bolt the console in. It feels a little awkward also and I would definitely like to change the position of the selector. The previous owner modified the shaft to bring it further back but it's not enough. I'm hoping that the combination of the modified selector shaft plus the rear position will bring the whole package back to where it can be more comfortably used as well as allowing me to secure the console properly.
I don't really want to swap boxes because the W55 has recently been rebuilt and it's really nice to drive (no noises, no clunks). So I'm hoping I can just swap the selector boxes over. Does anyone have any idea how to do it & how much work is involved? I'm hoping I don't need to break any seals in the box?
Any info would be great.
Cheers,
-Paul.

You'll have to remove the extension housing of the gearbox, sliding it back far enough to allow the little selector arm to come out. It's a bit tricky in the car, but can be done.
You'll have to remove the tailshaft & put some sealant back on the housing before you bolt it back on.
Cheers
Phil
