    Default Grinding cannon off exhaust...

I know this is probably a stupid question, but I don't know anything about exhausts, other than mine drones like hell, and while it has its merits, the bad definitely outweighs the good.

I'm flat broke, and I don't care enough to buy a new muffler for the 5M-E, so I'm just wondering whether I'd make the sound worse if I ground the cannon off the exhaust and left it without a muffler. It's on a 2.5" straight through, no cat. I don't really know what I'm wanting to achieve here, I love the loudness, I guess I'm just wondering whether ditching the cannon and running no muffler would be worse than it is at the moment, drone-wise. Will it be even louder without the cannon?

    Cheers

it'll be a louder farting sound

Mufflers aren't that expensive, as stated above. Or if you save for a little longer then you may be able to get a better one, and get a 2nd hand dump pipe of other form of tip on there

Thanks for the info, but when I say I'm broke, I really mean it. I have $80c in change at the moment, and $7 in the bank And when I have money, it won't get spent on a new muffler, no matter how cheap, I've lived with it for a few years now + no interior or sound deadening.

Just imagine I only have the option of grinding it off or leaving it, surely it will be a different sound, maybe louder, but it will lose the drone right?

I'd say you will have a lot more drone..

I once cut my 3" catback off at where it goes under the diff due to damage and drove it for a couple of days, sounded like a truck on steroids and loosened most of my interior plastic with vibration - VERY loud!

wont exactly DRONE more, it will however be a shitload louder!

if you cut it off, and you hate it more, you aint going to have the cash to weld it back up are you?

so id say leave it as is for now till you can get a 2.5" straight thru muffler fitted further upfront..

shoul only cost $150 fitted....so save those pennies and nickels, your only $149.20 away!

If you have a cannon maybe you could make up a bung for it, or maybe a plate inside one of the flanges with holes drilled.

It will be louder for sure ALOT louder!
I remember when i was making my exhaust ( 3 inch straight through no cat ) I had done all the exhaust bar the muffler ( 3 inch straight through muffler) when i drove to a mates work shop so i could weld the muffler on a hoist.
It was loud as hell ........but put the muffler on and its alot quieter
The amount those straight through mufflers quiten down a car is uncanny.

Youl be defected the day you cut it off

If it's a nasty little chinese milo tin, it won't really make it any louder getting rid of it. Buying a decent muffler is the only way to actually shut the bloody thing up. A couple of days ago I put an ebay cannon on an NA Cordia... MY GOD is sounded BAD! (It had no other muffler...)

Q:- is your car an Auto..?
you say it's a 2.5" straight through, ... Well thas your problem...
I had the same shit drone, on my wifes MA61..
System was on the car when we bought it...
The 2.5" system + 5M-E = Drone... ( its the same shit drone you get from a Holden motor.. )
I went back to a 2" system, lost the drone & gained power..
A 2" exhaust system, will do up to 250hp, & as the 5M-E only has 25hp , your 2.5" system is over kill..

hmm, 7 bucks should be able to buy you a packet of metal scourers, some tekscrews and you should be able to find a bit of flat metal lying around somewhere.
fill exhaust with metal scouring pads (pack em in there real good), get metal plate, hammer around exhaust tip, tek screw into place and drill a couple of holes into the end of the plate to get the exahust gasses back out again to the equivalent of a 2 inch size hole.
other than that , look in the free to a good home section and befreind someone here that can help to weld it up to your exhaust.
