Engine etc is from an auto?
Or the car was originally auto?
Hey people,
i've just had my 1jz wired up in my mz20 soarer, by a friend of a friend. we got it running, but it wouldnt let the key out unless i disconnected the battery... now it wont turn on to acc, etc. like its locked some how, is this an electrical fault or could it be that the barrels stuffed as it hasnt been used in 6 months?
Also what wires do i need to hook up the digital speedo? i've seen the info before but now i cant find it.
any info is greatly appreciated
cheers josh v

Have you tried turning the wheel both ways to take the load off the barrel. Sounds like the steering lock has come on.

yeah the car was originally an auto, but i've used the auto from the jza70 halfcut. i used the digital speedo cable from the old gearbox and screwed it in the jza70 auto.
yes the steering wheel has locked, but the ignition barrel was locked before this. i thought it might have been the steering wheel being locked, so i turned it side to side while trying to turn the key and thats when the steering wheel locked also... now they are both locked!
thanks for the help
So you managed to get the key into the "locked" position and then removed it?
Hows your key looking?
Grab some graphite powder and put a little bit in the lock and wiggle the key to try and get it to turn. If your key is a little worse for wear take it to a locksmith and have them emphasise the humps on the key so it can properly disengage the lock pins.

Kyosho, no, i can put the key into the ignition, but it wont turn to acc, etc.
LeeRoy, yeah i was thinking of doing that and using a bit of inox, the keys are fairly new too.
cheers
What position is the ignition barrel currently in?
Hey dude, take the steering column trim off and you'll find a smallish two wire plug leading into around the ignition barrel simply unplug it!
Unless it's the other type which has a little control box. But it's just a matter of following wires and unplugging.
Otherwise find the wires at the gearstick where the auto lever was plugged... you'd need the wiring diagrams but usually just a matter of shorting two wires!
Actually there is another type which isn't even electric... just a simple cable running from the auto gear stick (where it was) up to the key barrel. Just find this and take it off the lever that will be at the key barrel!
Kyosho, the ignition is currently in the off position.
Devils, i have already unplugged those wires and nothing happened, i even unscrewed the mechanism, to evail. But il try finding the cable that you mentioned. i have to wait till the weekend though, cos my cars at me old mans house.

If it's in the "off" position, and not yet to the locked position, it is the device the Devils has mentioned.
I'm unsure if it gets 12V pos or grounded or what, but that is the device that will have you locked up.
Sounds a bit funny. First port of call is to look at the wiring diagram for the halfcut. If it doesnt show it on the wiring diagram, then it should be a cable. Check to see if the switches on the shift lever are engaging properly. It could just be something loose around there.
Cheers, Owen
