    Default Timing belt Tensioner

Hi all got a problem the other day when i fitted the timing belt back on to the blacktop. I fitted the new toda timing belt and when i put the tensioner back on it seamed to be ok but over night it loosened off quite a bit. There was no problem with it before i pulled the engine apart so i am stumped. Does anyone know why it would just loose tension?

The bt tensioners are hydraulic right? I have been told they can be problematic. Will try and find more info....

yes the black top ones can fail
imo you MUST replace them everytime you do the belt.

those tensioners can collapse if you have pressed them together too quickly, like in a big press. being hydraulic, they take ages to compress to reinstall the lock pin.
done correctly, there is no problem with them and I've done heaps. if you've buggered it, its expensive, as it does not fit any other Toyota model I've worked on

Replace it. Mine was fine when I took it off (3sgte engine), then when I reinstalled it it had some freeplay. Its really not worth risking, you're best off getting a new one seeing as it has loosened off on you overnight, sounds like its no good.

Yep, replace it. I had a brand new blacktop tensioner fail after 5000km. I actually shimmed the pivot bolt for the pulley so it could lock in place while I was waiting for another new one to arrive from Mr Revhead.

I have had a brand new one fail too.

The engine builder assembled the engine and the brand new one out of the box just did not have enough tension,
so we ordered a new one from toyota overnight and the next day the new one had heaps more tension.
