Default 7mge brian crower cams and ignition timing issue

    Hey

I have just fitted a set of brian crower stage 2 cams to my 7MGE and now I cant get enough static ignition advance before I hit the end of the adjustment range. Max advance at idle I can get is about 5 deg BTDC.

I have tried popping the dizzy out and advancing it by one tooth on the drive gear but this gave way too much advance.

Anybody else tried these cams out and had similar issues??

I may just file out the slot to get about another 10 degrees advance.

Factory setting is 10 deg BTDC and I have found it runs well with upto 15 deg BTDC on premium or LPG.

file the slot out completely like you have said, or just cut it out... either way 7m dizzys are a dime a dozen at pick n payless (aslong as you can fit it in you pocket)

ninja edit: i also find that any 7m ive played with, that at the factory +10 will always ping its tits off on normal unleaded fuel,

hence any 7m i adjust time to +13-14

    Hi Blake

Slotted it out a bit with a file and now I have about 10 deg BTDC. Still idles and runs pretty crappy though. I will have one more go at it before pulling the cams out again.

I have an adjustable cam gear that I might swap over to the exhaust cam so I can get a bit of timing advance from that also.

forgive the n00bosity, but Blake, wouldn't it ping more if the timing was advanced further?

depends on the fuel.... our cressy has always pinged at +10 on normal unleaded,

throw in some PULP, and its fine,

If your still running a stock ecu and afm this would be alot of the problem with bigger cams.
    If in doubt power out

Just a little update. I tried retarding the inlet cam this morning about 5 degrees to reduce valve overlap since my adjustable wheel is on the inlet cam. And it started and idled no problems. Looks like this weekend will be spent accurately degreeing the cams.

Anybody else fitted Brian Crower cams to a 7MGE engine?? If so please share your advance settings etc

I have got it running well now but I needed a fair bit of advance on both cams to bring the power curve down to a usable rev range.

These cams would run really well in a manual car. Power is good above 3000rpm and when the gear shifts at about 5500-6000rpm its seems to be on the power peak. These cams would run really well in a manual car.
