Owen, the level of solids in a primer dictates that you should not use the in gun filter. Just strain the paint going into the pot.

    cheers Chuck.

K.spencer not sure if this is any use to you now that youve bought your supply's and started painting but i just finished painting my celica with 3M acrylic products from supercheap...

    "i used all 3M products"

    2?ltrs of primer
    maybe about 2.5ltrs of white
3 or so ltrs of clear
9 or so ltrs of thinners
and abit of wax and grease remover...

all up paint job cost me just under $200 a few pic of my progress....

primer wet sanded and taped back up

    First coat of white on

    finished

pics of paint from gun with overspray, orange peel and dust etc...

not so nice... so wet sanded 1200grit > 1500grit >2000 grit

Buff it with some compound and polish it... one side done.....alot more sanding to go...

This was the first real thing ive sprayed and im pretty proud of it... i just tested the gun alot before i put paint to a panel

    Thanks, Jai.

    Hey Mate
    Cheers for the pics
    Also doing gloss white
    Looks good.
Can we just go through the steps

    1) Primer filler sand blemish's etc
    2) Same as above
    3) Primer filler wet sand 1200
    4) Paint colour
    5) Paint colour
    6) Paint colour with 15% clear
    7) Clear , wet sand 1200
    8) Clear , wet sand 1500
    9) Clear , wet sand 2000-2500
    10) Wait 48 hours then give a good Polish with compund

Using 1.7 tip for primerfill , primer has its own gun
Using 1.4 tip for Colour and clear, same gun for paint and clear
When i finish each layer i run thinners through the gun then some water let it dry and do the next coat and give the coat a wipe down with grease and wax remover.

    Any tips would be good
    Cheers

Just running thinners through the gun won't be sufficient, you will need to strip it down and clean all the parts which come in contact with paint. This is done with thinners (I keep a jar of used cleaning thinners for the first go to get most shit off, then use some fresh thinners to get the final remnants off).

A strip and clean will take forever the first time, but after a while you get quick at it and it can take a matter of minutes to complete.

Dunno if I would be putting water near my spray gun...

yeah i never put water through my gun, just cleaned the bucket out with thinners and stripped it down like o_man said...

i used a 1.7mm tip for spraying clear and colour and a 1.9 for primer... the 1.7 is probably to big??? but all i had and turned out ok i guess..

my steps (not sure if correct but how i did it lol )

    sand car
wipe down /tape up / wax grease remover
spray primer (i just put on two light coats but enough to make it look solid
wet sand with 800 >very lightly just to flatten out and get high parts out
re - tape and wipe down
    3 coats of colour
    4 coats of clear
a week later i then started wetsanding and went from 1200 >1500 >2000
    fine cut then a polish

this is the method i used and not saying its right but mine turned out ok...never cleaned the gun out after each coat just kept going around the car with paint (when i finished bonnet roof and one side of the car the other side was ready for another coat)

    Cheers, Jai

If your current paint is fair condition, then there is nothing wrong with Jai's method. Personally I don't wet sand primer, and colour and clear go on in the same sitting so there isn't sanding between coats. Once you have 2 layers of clear on, there is no problem with leaving it for a bit then wet sanding the clear lightly to remove built up orange peel, then putting further coats on. It also seems that a drizzle of colour in the first coat of clear is a popular method of getting more percieved depth, and thinning out the clear more as you go also seems popular.

Owen, medium and coarser metallics would prove to be a big problem. If spraying metallic, I would just use the dunce's cap filters when placing the paint in the gun pot.

Tried the gun filter once with medium coarse metallic, got less than 200ml of paint on before I had to remove the pesky blocked filter.

    cheers Chuck.

Righto, might just leave it out. Don't seem to be trapping anything with them anyways, they come out clean (other than having paint on them duh) when I strip the gun.

In other news, anyone got any experience with KBS coatings?? They seem to be an Aussie made and owned version of POR15, except their ads appear to make their products seem even better!!

Their high temp manifold paint brushes on and levels out a treat.

While on that topic, has anyone painted any of the high temp ceramic coatings at home?

I ask because I got a manifold done at a place here for almost $300 and lets just say it was the worst job i'd ever seen, and is already coming off a few months later.

I did a bit of research on the net and it appears that the coating is just a special kind of spray paint that is then cured in an oven (they obviously skipped the oven curing phase so I basically paid for someone to spray paint the parts black FML)

I thought I'd give it a go myself if the need arose again, so would be keen to hear if anyone else has done this

i used VHT high temp on my exhaust manifold and its been 15,000kms and a few months now and its still good. you can cure it on the car, instructions are on the can.

the can cost me $20 or so. make sure you buy the exhaust paint, they have different temps for difference parts of the car. i also used high temp on my intake manifold and rocker cover, was great =]

Well the stuff these guys use is supposed to have insulating properties, so thats why I went for it because I had no heat shields with the new mani.
A few people had recommended a place called CIC so I wandered along and they told me all about how they are the only place in town who can do it, and how its a special unique process. However I later discovered that they lied about both of those things.

my exhaust manifold is just as hot with it then it was without. so not sure if it would have "insulating properties" lol try heat wrapping it, i guess.

yes because you used spray paint and not ceramic coating. if you read my post im not asking how to keep heat down, im asking if anyone has applied the ceramic themselves. (Like these sort of coatings http://www.jet-hot.com.au/)
