Thanks Ian, Owen thats just what I wanted to hear
Since its going to be metallic purple, I should lean toward a a light grey, light blue.

Is it going to be a poofy violet, or a deep purple?? If its lighter, use the light blue, it will come out better than grey. If its deep purple, then use red, its darker. Metallics have nothing to do with the primer colour you should use, its the shade of the colour that counts.

Looks like it has more red than blue... I would say use the red primer... but check the darkness of the tint. If the red primer is darker than the base colour, use a light blue.

depending on the color you lay on your ta23 you'll have plenty of paint with 4 litres.
remember if you do a metallic pearl like i do to put on a base coat similar to that of the final color
i painted most of the hang on panels off my ta22 then re-attached them.

You have to be very careful when doing this with metallic paint!

The problem is that the metallic flakes/particles in the paint flow and align in the direction that the paint runs on the surface.
This means that if you paint say a door off the car, laying on the ground to make things easier, itll come out a different color compared to the rest of the car.

So when painting metallic, its best to paint all panels/doors on the car, as itll give a consistent colour.

Hey Guys just another quick Q
After removing both windows from the car, what do you use to get the left over black gooey sealant off the the sils?

Prepsol/prepwash/wax and grease remover or you can use thinners...

OK finally an update (Sorry I was in the field for a week)

OK, Thanks to MWP's tip, I got myself some better primer. It's a two part primer and is mixed 4:1

I mixed it, added some thinner (around 20-25% as per the instructions) tiped it into the gun and off I went.
Before actual spraying I gave it another clean.
A little tip I got off the web (Weather it works or not is anyones guess) was to use glass cleaner (windex or similar) then use wax an grease remover.

As the old saying goes...Good from afar, but far from good

    And the crappy bits...

I am hoping someone can tell me what caused this. Gun setting, ambient temp, technique, poor prep work?
The temp was quite high today (around 30 I guess) and the pressure may have been a little high (around 37 PSI).

After much waiting I did the underside and this turned out much better

The main differences were lower pressure at the gun and a better technique. I know for a fact that when i was doing the top I would catch myself turning my wrist and not keeping the gun at 90 degrees to the boot so I think that may have contributed as well.

OK, so what next? Do I leave this to dry\cure for a few weeks?
And once it is time to sand it back, do i sand it so it is super smooth (1200 - 2000 wet\dry), or is it meant to be a little rough for the colour to attach to?

    Look forward to more help.

Doesnt look too bad.... the underside looks better than ive managed to do.
This is high-build primer though, so its designed to be sanded down after spraying.
Off the gun you dont get a super smooth finish.

Im using a little more than 25% thinners with it, especially on >25deg days like we are having at the moment.
I spray with a 1.4mm tip at around 30 PSI from a HVLP gun.
Ive tried with a 1.7mm tip, but the 1.4mm is easier to control.

As for how long before sanding, another coat or top coat... 12hrs is plenty.
This stuff goes rock hard pretty quickly.

I sand back to 600 grit, thats far enough for primer...

    My latest efforts...
This is the same Epotec primer.
The bonnet, doors & guards are already done.

As im getting it done so slowly (lots of filler work required), im doing a bit at a time to stop the bare metal from rusting.
When its all primed, ill get a paint & panel place to finish it off in a booth.
