TA22 diff problem

G'day

I have a 1975 celica with a 4AGE conversion. After a rather hard launch on the weekend my diff is making a really bad noise.

At above 50kms its noisey enough to be heard over my exhuast (2in straight through) and just gets louder. When taking off slowly you can hear the gears in the diff engageing as I release the clutch. I haven't had time to pull it apart yet and see what damage is done yet but I'm fearing that its royally stuffed.

Basically I would like to know if I'm better off doing a conversion to a R31 rear end as it looks the best for my budget. Or do I try to find a orginal diff and hope its okay. I'm going to guess that like everything else with these cars I won't be tripping over spare parts or if anyone has one or knows of anyone with one I am in the market.

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated as I was hoping to take it to Power cruise this year.

It sounds like it is gonna go bang any tick of the clock. I have replaced 3 diffs in my '22 from doing track work etc. Best to replace the centre asap before you are stranded on the side of the road.

Get to the wreckers and pull any of the 'T' series diffs out of the cars listed on the website below. You'll probably be getting a T292 or a T312, either is fine. Just different ratios.

The reason I don't upgrade is a mixture of laziness and the fact that a replacement 2nd hand centre is usually only $50 which I am happy to pay. I have 2 spare centres sitting at home for when I break my next one, plus I have 2 noisy ones ready to go to the scrappy cos once they start making noise they are on their last legs. REPLACE NOW!

i'm in QLD however, and they aren't light so postage probably won't be either

might want to check your axle shafts will you're at it

I've got a complete diff (4.11 open centre iirc) that you can have if you want mate.

I'll check the shafts. Am I mainly looking for scoring from the diff pieces floating around?

I'll check out the above guy from Camberra just because its closer but may have to hit you up too.
