    Default Caliper Recos

Im currently giving a set of calipers abit of a hoof up,
And have hit a few issues,
Chrome gone off inside and ends of slider tubes, dooes this matter do i need to get them redone?
    Rehone the piston bores?
also the bolts that go down the slider tubes should they have some sort of coating, i was thinking of just rubbing them up with a non metalic antiseaze, what ever was on them before hasnt prevented them rusting up and has casue the inside of the slider tubes to rust/chrome fall out

What are peoples opinions on bead blasting or just painting over a clean body?

    Cheers

Can't give much advice about the rusty slider bolts but you should use a caliper grease for those when putting it back together. Its a soap based grease i think, the correct name is in the TSRM or BGM whatever you AW11 ppl call it

I've always just painted over a clean body. I've had a few little chips come off here and there but ya can't complain when u can paint both calipers for under $15.

If the bores still look new and theres no rust or pitting then they should be just fine, i wouldn't bother honing them.

Im using a product called G2 caliper paint which is a 2part paint. they recon i just clean them and paint them, so i guess thats what i will do,
Going to paint them grey, as its subtle but not black which is abit to boring,
Running them back on a wire wheel sounds like a good idea but im not sure if i could get to 100% of it, the mass would be done with a big grinder bassed wheel and the tight bits with a dremmel,

The bores are dirty and i cant clean it, i am tempted to runs some incredibly fine (2000) wet and dry down them (turn it around in there) to clean them back

with the bolts and tubes, give the bolts a good clean up with a wire brush,

do not use a spray type lube, it will just dry up,

pack then slides with caliper assy grease, and fill the rubber boots with greas also,

    done!

ninja edit,....just paint over a clean caliper body!....

Sounds good with the paint. I used a wire brush in a drill press and cleaned the calipers up that way. Doing it like that meant i had more control and since i left the slider bushes in the caliper (didn't replace them) i didn't want to damage them with the wire brush if it slipped. I couldn't get to all of the parts of the caliper but that was only at the back. A wire brush, scraper and cloths cleaned up the rest.

I had a small amount of pitting in mine and ran some really fine sandpaper over it to clean it up. I can't remember what grade it was though. If that dosn't work you can buy cheap honing tools for calipers from Repco and Supercheap. Its more the piston you have to be worried about though as thats what seals against the oil seal.

I recently did my calipers. Fortunately I had access to a mates sandblasting box, so they all went in there and I gave them a spruce up that way. I used POR15 gloss black engine enamel on them and they look tough as

i bead blasted mine, can't remember the pressure though. i'll check with my dad as he told me what to use. i also used a really thick tape (the stuff with fabric impregnated in it, don't know what it's called) to mask off everywhere i didn't want blasted.

Buggered if I know! It was the blast box at his dad's work so I don't mess around with it, I just use whatever grit and presure setup is in there at the time and regulate the effect by moving the gun to and fro of what I am blasting. It was a fairly fine grit though, so I did mask up the pistons with gaffa tape to avoid getting any under the rubber seals. Not to mention that after the blast, they got a full soap and water wash down, followed by a rubbing with acetone prior to the paint process.
