the box that would come closest to that description is a W40

its not a supra box, but from toyota crowns and corona mark II's, its in the same family as the supra box but is steel case and resembles the steel case celica W50 gearboxes (same box but 5speed). the bellhousings do not intechange between the W40/50 series steel gearboxes and the alloy case supra gearboxes.

to us toymoders these boxes are worth f-all, and i doubt any of us would pay $180 for one unless it was to keep a car totally original.

EDIT: also $550 is the round about going price for a alloy case supra box (W55/57/58) from a wrecker/importer, but people have been known to get some bargains.

    - go to wreckers
    - identify anything that had 22R (corona, hilux, ?)
    - remove or get removed
    - fit and do skids

trading post or similar? aim for the whole car, not just the gearbox (e.g. 5speed gearbox with free car)

Yeah I got my my w55 with a whole 92 cresta attached for $450. then removed W - S Bellhousing and proceeded to sell that for $300.
Plus all the manual goodies for my GX81 it basically was a free gearbox

Yep, I once bought a $200 car just to get a gearbox, then made my money back selling other bits. It's amazing what you can find in the trading post if you keep an eye on it!

yeah i remember looking at newer (91 - 94) soarers on car sales. and the guy had 4spd manual in the add. i wasn't sure if it was a typo and never got around to asking if thats what he ment.

would that W40 box mount up to a 1jz?
As they say in the book, assembly is the reverse of dismantling, but slower cos you forgot where all the bits are

no - W40/50 and W55/57/58 are different bolt pattern on front face of gearbox.

I'd say a W40 behind a 1JZ would contain mostly gear-set soup after tromping on the loud pedal.

W40's are actually quite strong, a lot of drag rotaries used to use them back in the day. I can't imagine why you'd want one behind a 1JZ though.

dammit i regret selling my whole sa63 for $450 a couple of years ago now. Could have made some money from the W55!
