Have the rotor machined out so that a locating sleeve can be made to fit over the axle's hub centric locator and come through the disk, it may need to be stepped to fit the wheel on (ie. Smaller diameter?!)

    Hi Medwin,

I agree that it would be nice to have the axle/disc/wheel tolerances spot-on so that everything fits like a glove, as it does in your car. But we'll have to agree to disagree with it being a 'necessity'.

If the wheelnuts do "work themselves loose in a matter of kilometres" as you say, then I (and many others running secondhand rims) must thank our lucky stars that ours have held up to the abuse with no 'hubcentric' rings locating the wheels for so many years.

Another way of looking at it is...

Using your figure of 5 x 12mm studs, you have ~565 square mm of cross sectional area in the studs alone, an equivalent area to a ~27mm diameter steel tube. Now how thick are the axles that do actually support the same weight in the average live axle rear end?

I'm not saying it's a complete waste of time, I just don't think that it is a critical problem to a brake build.

    Cheers,
    Timbo

read this a little thing i found on tensile strength:
    http://www.pacificreefsavers.com/How...er_Mooring.htm

Note they are testing stainless, which wouldn't have as high tensile strength as High tensile steel.

now compare that to you're 5 studs and hence i'd bet lots of money they'll be fine. 7,000kg x 20 = a lot more than your car
    beer me!

I can see peoples point about tensile strength, thats not really the worry I have. I was also talking about wheel centering and vibration problems too, its a common thing with wheels that are only located on by the studs.

We get alot of Landcruisers/Hiluxs at work with sunrasia wheels which aren't hub centric and they break studs often.

It is a legal requirement on cars these days to have the centre spigot the correct size to suit the wheel.

but thanks for all the replies guys
