I agree that it would be nice to have the axle/disc/wheel tolerances spot-on so that everything fits like a glove, as it does in your car. But we'll have to agree to disagree with it being a 'necessity'.
If the wheelnuts do "work themselves loose in a matter of kilometres" as you say, then I (and many others running secondhand rims) must thank our lucky stars that ours have held up to the abuse with no 'hubcentric' rings locating the wheels for so many years.
Another way of looking at it is...
Using your figure of 5 x 12mm studs, you have ~565 square mm of cross sectional area in the studs alone, an equivalent area to a ~27mm diameter steel tube. Now how thick are the axles that do actually support the same weight in the average live axle rear end?
I'm not saying it's a complete waste of time, I just don't think that it is a critical problem to a brake build.
