Default burnt out a splitfire direct ignition coil need help!

    hi there guys

i just burnt out a s15 splitfire coil which was installed on my 4age 20v
this coil was on cylinder 3
i am running a motec with ignition expander using sequential fire
it seems tho that all coils hav a heat 'bubble' where the last coil burnt, but it seems to b worse on 2 and 3 compared to 1 and 4

any ideas as to why this has happened?
or if you need more info to possibly diagnose the problem let me know

thanks for any help anyone provides!!
    cheers!

    incorrect dwell? incorrect ignitors?

wouldn't the s15 ignitors provide to much spark for the 20V, or do they adapt using the Motec ?
maybe its due to poor wiring ?

-dwell settings is set to 1.8 ms as per settings from the motec site

    - it has a built in ignitors in the s15 coils compared to the s13 n s14 coils

    - what does too much spark mean? could you plz elaborate?

    - wiring was checked when the coils and coil harness was installed. i was thinkin a possible bad earth so i will put a wire from the earth directly to the earth inthe battery to make sure again

-what pic would you like me to take? pic of the coil ?

    thanks guys for the response

The only way you can really kill a coil is by it overheating... by having too much dwell time.

yea... it overheated big time.. lik the top of the coil has melted etc etc

    umm... icic...
so a shorter dwell time will overheat/burn out a coil?
i thought the longer the time, the more chance of overheating
    can anyone else confirm

    thanks for your response mate!

dwell that is too longer will overheat a coil and damage the ignitor

too short a dwell time and you get a crap spark

re-reads thread: if the coils have built-in ignitors then does the expander box do anything apart from provide more low-voltage signals to drive ignitors?

the expander also allows me to do sequential spark instead of only wasted
is that what you wanted to know?

i was also thinkin a longer dwell time would make the coil burn/overheat instead of a shorter dwell time
i will have to check this up with various other ppl then

    thanks for replyin mate

    oh i c!!
i thought dwell was how long the coil was 'on' for!
    interesting

ok so with that in my mind, the next question is: is the dwell time of 1.8ms too short?
from the motec site i got this info:
    http://www.motec.com.au/drawings/m42.pdf
saying to use 1.8ms for dwell
i assume this is for stock coils and since these are direct replacement for stock coils i was wondering is this too short
    thanks guys!!

Fuck it, sorry, i got it the wrong way around

Your dwell time (charge time) is too long.
That or the ignition coils need a ballast?

1.8ms dwell time is very small but all that will normally happen is you get a weak spark.
most coils use 2.5ms or more.

id say its more like an earth problem or incorrect style of plug that has caused youre problem.

hmm.... i'll try to find out if s15 coils need a seperate ballast
from what i know they dont but i'll double check
    =)
    cant hurt

yea coz the dwell time was reduced from 3.2ms coz i had coil packs and leads and when i changed to this i just went off the motec site as to what dwell time was to b used

    thanks for the info mate

i was thinking it could be a bad earth... but since they are all connected to the same earth wire which is then earthed to a bolt on the engine... shouldnt all coils burn out coz they all have the same earth?

the plug is correct altho made for a s15, the length n plug is perfect for a 20v
i just needed to use a s15 harness for the plug on top of the coil

    thanks for your help

i was talking about the spark plugs. do they sit correctly in the coil? are they the same as what an s15 would run ie does the coil suit the plug?

    cheers
