GT4 ST185 JDM FMIC Setup

Hey Guys,

has anyone installed a FMIC on a standard JDM spec ST185 GT4???

I've heard conflicting opinions as to the amount of room in the front there, some people say it'll fit with the standard front bar, others say it's too tight and you'll have to get a group A front bar. Obviously the group A FB has more flow and more room, but if it'll fit the standard, that may be the way to go for the time being.

you can fit them under a standard bar , though your core size will be smaller , and the bumper mount needs fiddling to make everything happy ..

What are your power goals , and do you need the massive 600 X 300 X 75 items which are fitted to most gt4's here ( which have the power to back up needs for such a cooler )

remember with a standard bar half of the cooler core will be blocked from direct airflow if you use something too big .

Id go a small core that will fit in the mouth opening you have , until you can grab a group A bar ..

I went a bigger cooler, to save me upgrading later when I get the group A front bar. Even though half my cooler is, as classique mentioned, blocked by direct air flow, it will still work way more efficient than that dodgy top mount because its at the front of the car and will not heatsoak(when your intercooler absorbs heat from the engine making it hotter, thus making the air charge flowing through it hotter which means less power) anywhere as near as much. When I put my big cooler on, without the grp a front, my car was much faster. I didnt expect such an improvement. I plan to get a Grp A front soon though.



I got this intercooler from Justjap if I remember correctly for about $240 around 8 months ago. For a cheapy its been great - so I bet the more popular branded ones must be pretty damn good.

What size is the core you've installed on your's Howieau? (I noticed you're running a white GT4 too, nice choice! ) A mob of ebay are selling mandrel bent aluminium piping kits for the GT4, rekon that you can fit a 600x300x76mm core in behind the front bar (see attached pic). It seems from the pic though that it'll be the same deal as yours Howieau, half the core is hidden behind the FB, so the GpA FB will definately allow more flow, but the standard FB will still be an improvement in the mean time.

I've got a parts list for the GpA front bar, so I'll be getting that with the turbo / intercooler upgrade provided it's not ridiculously priced. (I had the carbon trim on the front priced up and it was almost $500 I think from memory. = ridiculous). I'll call Toyota today and find out. Is there anywhere else that might stock them cheaper?

This is the Bar and Plate core that comes with the kit, I'm no expert on these, does it look dense enough? or more like a cheap chinese copy?

Classique71, I'll be sticking a Garrett GT2871R Turbo in there, and forging the internals of the engine set with a 9.0:1 CR later on, so the big IC is a must.

My intercooler size is 600x300x76 aswell. I also went with that piping kit too haha

Not sure about that intercooler, I havent seen many others besides mine to be able to comment on the quality, looks fine though.

Beward of that bloke that makes that kit. I was meant to recieve the intercooler piping/joins/throttle body adapter and it took ages! The intecooler pipes and silicon joins finally came but no TB adapter. I emailed him plenty of times but no response. In the end I actually had to pretend to be another potential customer and say "Ive seen your kit perform in my friends GT4 and am interested in buying one but he never received his throttle body adapter and I dont want to get screwed over either, so if you could send it to him to convince me youre a legit dealer ill send through my payment for the kit when he receives it. 3 days later my adapter arrives, 2 months after my piping. Then I sent a msg back with some profanities and such.

Be very careful of him. Not sure if hes picked up his act, but as for the kit itself it worked really well on my car.

If you don't want to go to the expense of the full GrpA bumper and painting etc, you can just use the GroupA front support bar. It fits behind the standard bumper nicely and gives you a lot more room :

I have been wanting to do exactly this for a while but I'm having trouble finding that reinforcement bar. I might have to pay Mr-T a visit.

that's fukin sik!! is that orderable from Toyota as is? ie just the support? and is this a legal mod, and will pass an engineers test? does it have the same "stopping power" as the standard bar?

I do like the stock bumper, and if I can get away with leaving the standard bumper on and not the "Big Mouth" looking thing from the GpA, (yeh i've had a change of heart... ) maybe put a nice skirt around it (all around the car), should look shweet. (i do have a GpA hood though.. looks so sweet in the rear view mirror with the yellow spotties on, very "get the Fuk out of my way!!")

Its the stock bar from the Group A ST185, which was available for sale new in Australia, so it would meet any engineering inspection.

You can order them from Toyota, but I can't remember if you have to give them a VIN from a GroupA car before you can order it or not. Can't hurt to try.

I think it depends on how the sales rep at the Toyota dealership is feeling at the time.

I have heard reports of them refusing to give out the bumpers if you don't provide a Group A vin number. I have also heard them just order for anybody regardless.
