    Default Carbon Fibre Sheets

    hi all,

i have strayed away from putting my 20v into my current race car, being the Te30 2 door.

And decided that due to the avalibility of panels for the 2 door are getting harder to find CHEAPLY the 20v would look more at home in an ae71...

Thus having already put alloy door cards into the te30 i have decided to go to carbon fibre... coming to my next problem nowon here sells the blooys stuff.

So was wonderin if anyone would know where i could get some from... (without making it my self)

Its really not that hard to make sheets that size. i assume you want flat sheets.

    You need
    Raw carbon plain/ twill weave,
Resin (UV stable polyester would be fine for that purpose so a clear surf board resin even for easy availability)
Two sheets of reasonably thick plate glass
    mold release wax.
a heap of weight that can distributed over the glass.

Wax up the glass sheets, spread some resin over the glass with, lay down the CF cloth make sure the sheet is spread out properly and flat, wet out the carbon properly, place the 2nd glass plate on top push it down ensure no air bubbles then put a heap of weight on it i use bricks and lots of them, a bit of the resin will squeeze out its not a problem as long as there is no air under the glass plate. Let it cure, i leave over nigh usually. you will end up with a nice looking flat sheet of CF.

If you want to make sure it's even, some coins make cheap and easy spacers as well.

There is a bloke here in SA somewhere that does sheets of carbon.......... He is at sailsbury somewhere..

Cant remember his name sorry..... I met him at small car sunday and spoket to him about a carbon sheet to seal off my boot from the back seat using a sheet ( 800x400mm)

When he told me how much he wanted i almost told him to get F@$%ed.....
Even with my "Money is no option attitude" it was too much. ..... Im sure i could find it cheaper.

So if you have money im sure you can get some here. He wouldnt be that hard to track down.

theres a carbon fibre shortage around the world at the moment. Its been like almost 2 years without it. Theres a place at thebarton that's suppose to sell it and there has been a memo going around to all state offices asking why we havent received some for a long time. Ill see if I can find out the name of it from a mate but you might be beter off looking in the yellowpages.

yup, too many new planes, and not enough producers.

why not fibreglass? weigth difference unless you are using pre-preg and vac will not be much.. strength? depends on the resin, your design, and again, ability to fabricate and cure properly...

More CF manufacturing has come on line, it is not as difficult to get as it was 6 months back, if you know where you can readily purchase it. I work with the stuff daily.
I bought a roll on Monday was told they were expecting "reasonable supply" for at lest a few months.
