I know my old mech put a K50 in his old KE70 that had a K40, put i don't know if he changed anything, i don't think he did
is it a straight swap? eg same tailshaft etc
does it use same clutch as well cos have just got brand new clutch for the k40
what else would i need to change/modify
thanks for any help guys

yup, same same... only issues are if you move KE70 box to the earlier series.
no issues.

straight swap if both gearboxes are ke70 versions. k series gearboxes had three different shifter positions (ke70 furthest back), and at least the ke70 ones had slightly different gearbox mounts to the earlier ones (mount holes spaced further apart than earlier ones.
I have seen that some of them also have different output splines as well but the difference I've seen was between ke20 and ke30 - make sure if you buy the box that you get the tailshaft yoke to match and you'll be ok - unsure if the same applies for input splines across versions.
other than that, they will all bolt to k series engines and are the same physical length. swapping between series may require mods to gearbox crossmember and trans tunnel gearshift holes (new holes or slot/extend old ones), and slight trans tunnel massaging required for ke70 k50 into a ke10.

KE10, KE20/30/55, and KE70 are the three shifter positions.
rear engine mount (gearbox mount) is same from KE10-KE55
KE10 and very early KE20 had a smaller input shaft and smaller clutch
only output spline differences i have seen are from auto to manual. which manuals were different?
KE70 5 spd into KE10.. will need shifter position cut (the auto KE10 is about the right spot for KE20/30/55 shifter).. where needs massaging?

I had a k40 that I pulled from a KE25 I once had, the guy I sold it to for his KE30 came back sooking about output shaft not the same, and I hadn't given him a usable yoke. confirmed with a KE30 k40 I also had at the time - input shaft was the same spline but output shaft had different number of splines - never seen it on any other k series box myself either.

weird! maybe it was an early version perhaps?

KE25 I had might have been a wierder model, the only one I've ever seen with a vinyl roof - pity underneath was stuffed...
KE70 k50 into KE10 needs slight massaging in tunnel area right at the rear of the gearbox - where the big bolt things hang off the side that hold the gearstick return springs. comes real close, but starting the engine makes it bash the tunnel pretty loudly. this was in a 1969 KE10, with a 5K and KE70 k50, using standard KE10 engine mounts, and standard KE70 gearbox mounts on KE10 crossmember with slotted holes Might be avoidable by spacing the gearbox crossmember down a little away from the body but seemed more dodgy than massaging thetunnel to me at the time...
for reference the KE70 k50 gearstick seems to come out of the box 16cm further back than the KE10 stick, or there abouts. I just cut a new hole in the tunnel, and patched the original hole.

I found K40s tended to be a bit stronger than K50s, or at least they took far more abuse before they gave up. And I had a feeling that the ratios might be different, or at least between a KE70 K50, and a KE30 K40. There was a KT14# Corona with a 5K I think and a T50 - little hard to find in Australia though. But K40 to K50, as long as they are out of the same model, straight swap.

Thread revival. If I have a K box from a KE70 with the rearward shifter, can I swap the extension housing over from a KE30 box to put it in said KE30? Is it as simple as unbolt extension housing, put goo on join and put new housing on?

no
a KE70 K50 will swap extension housiong directly with a KE3/5 K50 only.
the 4 speeds have different shift rods, as the lever thing between shifter and shift rods are different.
so... if we are talkign 4 speeds, you need to take off the ext housing, then take the bottom cover off, pull out the shift lock bits, then pull out the shift rods and swap them over.
the reverse switches are in diff positions, and the KE70 has the switch near the friont (iirc) so has a longer reverse rod to compensate.
to swap shift rods, you just need to carefully drift out the spring pin thing in the shift fork.. then slide the new rod in and replace the spring pin thing

Just the man I wanted to reply. Talking K50 to K50. So all should be good just swapping extensions?
