I'm using Shell Helix Ultra (5/40) at the moment, thought I'd test it out. It's pretty decent oil as far as I can tell so far.

Aside from that I used Elf Excellium (5/40)

I've tried Nulon (10/30 semi synth) which wasn't really special at all.

Aside from that, I know one guy that uses Motul 10-30 full synth... it's about $80 for 4L though But he swears by it.

There was a test done of all the top quality oils, last year. I cant remember who did the test, sorry, I looked, but couldn't find it. It was a detailed and extensive test, which actually showed wear on pistons in pics, one for each oil. Roughly 20 tested.

Royal Purple oils had the best results, with pretty much no wear marks! It stood out above the rest. RECOMENDED

    * Penrite fully synth performed excellent, and the organic oils were good as well,
    * Motul Turbo Light was good too.
    * Mobil 1 was NOT in the top 10 ( considerable amount of wear compared to the top 3)
    * Shell oils were the worst

    our high revving motors (9grand)
we use castrol edge full synth 0-40 (maybe 50)
we also run oil warmer before firing it up

    Whatever's on sale & isn't synthetic - 10w30 or 40.
I wouldn't change any synthetic in anything under 10 to 15,000 km or mi, unless it had been abused. Abused is lots of cold starts & short drives, never getting its temp up or contaminated from a blown HG, not high RPMs or track days.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong here, but aren't non-synthetic oils more prone to "cooking" if you have a turbo (or two!) to keep things warm? I've always used synthetic oils in my engine more or less for this reason. It does cost a fair bit more to change the oil - it can get close to 3 times more expensive. I also aim to change the oil around every 5000km - 7500km depending on how I've been driving. Mind you, my engine is getting old and tired, so oil will get contaminated faster than in a newer engine.

So long as it's recommended for turbo engines, and you change it regularly (I do oil and filter change ~5000km) I can't see any need in a street car.

I can't say that I've seen many/any mineral oils recommended for use on a turbo engine. Then again, I've never really looked!

i'm happy to use castrol.. minimal oil loss in all engines i use.... and runs very smooth too

my 4A-GE smallport uses 10W-40 magnatec.. changed every 3 to 5000 kms depending on how i've driven (short or long distance, lots of thrashing or minimal throttle etc etc) never loses any oil.. i know a few people who've got perfect condition 4A-GEs and use things like shell, mobil1 etc lose half the dipstick in 3000 kms..

same with my dad's isuzu 3.1D, probably one of the biggest consumer of engine oil.. tried everything from shell to esso, full synthetic 5W-40 to mineral 20W-60, the best any of them could do was 1/4 loss on the dipstick.. with the castrol 5W-40 full synthetic, there was no loss of oil through service period..

in terms of running, motul and mobil1 was ok.. penrite is great value definitely.. but yea i'm sticking to castrol unless i run a rotary or V8

Make sure you have a good filter if you use Magnatec. Sure it sticks well to the engine, but it also sticks pretty good to all the junk at the bottom of your sump too....

    Gulf Western oils are crap.

Most oils aside from elf and red line all come from the same source (according to inside info, but could be inaccurate so don't quote my arse)

I'm using shell currently.. just testing it out... it's good, however i can smell if constantly (given i did add about 500mL extra than i should've cause i was a lazy arse and poured it all in one quick go).... It smells nice though with BP ultimate/shell v-power
