    Default Yet MORE 4ac problems!

    Ok,
This time it's deciding not to idle, this has been happening since i put new points in.
Iwas told that the reason they burned out again was because the little ceramic block resistor that sits ontop of the coil was gone. and to replace that.

I did that and everything was sweet for about a week, with the exception of a very occasional stalling due to it not idling. but now it's started doing it again. because it's something electrical the idle screw on the carbie has no effect.

any ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

P.S. the 4ac itself may be invincible but nothing hanging off the side of it is. Since i started driving this car around i've done: Rebuilt carbie
    Replaced all fuel hoses
    Replaced intank filter
    Replaced points and condensor twice
    Replaced distributor
    Ignition leads
    Coils x2
    Coil resistors
    All of which was nessecary

    All in 10 months, haha

have you checked the plugs? how long ago since they were last replaced they could be stuffed and not firing properly, but other then that I cant think of anything else looks like you have covered all the most likely causes

oh i forgot to add plugs and about 4 fuel filters. and pulling the tank out and flushing it out.

but yeah the plugs were done with the points. They're only about a month old.

I was so sure it was that resistor, but now it's doing the same thing again...

what gap are you setting the points to?
did you check the static timing afterwards?

yep ill talk to you about it tonight.

i always set the gap to 0.4mm. and the balast resistor wont burn out the points, the condensor will but you say you have changed that already.

    0.015 inches or mm..

0.2-0.4mm is a half decent setting.. remember that as new points wear, the gap gets smaller (increasing dwell etc)

also, as points wear, the timing changes

so check timign after setting points always.

Ok i don't think it was the points gap.
I threw in an electric dizzy i had lying around and it's running better than it did (the points were probably out) but it still decides not to idle intermittently.
I did time it by ear in the absence of a timing light. so i'll fix that up later but that's not what's causing the idling problem.
The idle screw still has no effect so i do think it's something on the other side of the engine.

I was pretty sure it was the points wearing in and having to be reset like you said but oh well...

Just thought i'd add that when it starts doing it it coughs and splutters and shit like it's not getting good ignition. backfires slightly too. but yeah this is only intermittently when it wants too?

Maybe the Alternator??? I've never changed that, and that's about the only part of the electrical system i haven't changed.

What makes you so sure it's electrical ? Maybe looking in the wrong place.

just cause it sputters and backfires as if it were not getting the propper ignition. plus the entire fuel system has recently been replaced / rebuilt.

Having said that i was told to check the "auxilary fuel pump" that's somewhere at the back of the carbie and see if it has any leaks and replace that shit if so. so i'll hit that up tomorrow.

but yeah that's why i reckon it's ignition, but i could be wrong (it's happened before)

Sounds more like fuel to me.
Idle screw has no effect ? Muck floating around, blocked idle/progression circuits, air leak, check valve ball left out, etc, etc.
