    Default 1J/2J sump question

So we all know that these sumps come in front and rear etc. What I was wondering is if the only reason for this is the position of the cross member ie. if the engine was mounted higher, could the sump then cover all 6 cylinders meaning that if you drained the oil you could then access all mains/big end bearings by simply removing the sump.

I understand there is a baffle in my front sump so if the above was undertaken a suitable baffle to cover the whole 6 cylinders would be required I assume.

    Opinions? Anything I have overlooked?

How would you ensure the oil was in one area ie as in the 'pan'...

I guess you could trap door or baffle inside it to make sure that the pick-up had oil all of the time.

Hmm... come to think of it. If you just used a front sump but used the upper section of it and modified it. Remove hard metal and fit something similar to what is currently on the front (but doesn't actually contain oil as it would basically be the same shape as the original hard section) then you could just remove it to check bearings easily and I don't think you would have issues with keeping the oil where it is supposed to be as the front section is still standard shape.

Or you could do the same thing but opposite with a rear sump version I guess.

Why not just mill the 'flat' section off and make a new 'bolt on' section if you only want access to inspect?

the engine would still have to be up pretty high. Are you talking about removing thw whole sump to check the bearings or just the pan.

would u be able to manouver the sump around the xmember and other things?

its a good idea tho. better than rmoving the engine.

it would be easier and less mucking around just to remove the whole engine as one.
or drop it out the bottom then do what you want.
whats the reason on pulling the motor out, thats something you dont really want to do very often. Do you expect a failure at anytime?

Just thought at the moment but engine to be in a dragster chassis. Would like to be able to , jack car, drain oil, take sump off and inspect bearings easily. Just like the pro guys can

Obviously, just thoughts at the moment. But I don't see why a complicated dry sump is required on what would be an otherwise stock engine. Especially in a drag car that really only has G forces forward and then back.
