Exclamation Argh... G series diff fitting issues.

    Hi all,

Ill try to keep this short...

Ive got a 4.1 CW&P (JZX81) and LSD center (JZA70 Torsen) to go into my RN25 hilux housing.
I dont have the RN25 pumpkin (what my diff builder calls the front housing section that holds the center) though.

My diff guy had a spare G series pumpkin off another 4wd (unknown model) that fits the RN25 housing, but the 4.1 pinion wont fit in it as its far too large.

Here is a photo of the large 4.1 JZX81 pinion:

    So my question is...
What pumpkin (front housing section) do i need that will allow the huge pinion gear to fit and bolt up to the RN25 housing?

    Thanks in advance!

Its called a diff carrier, not a pumpkin.

So you need the carrier that originally came with that pinion? is that right? if so, read the bearing part number of the bearing case and look it up through toyota and find out what car it suits. Then go to the wreckers looking for that car and pull the carrier off.

I dont know JZX81 is, but if its got IRS, then you cant use its carrier.

    p.s. that pinion is chipped

Can the pinion be machined down to fit?

the diff shop had to do this to my pinion in a r31 Borg warner diff when fitting the KAAZ lsd to 4.11 gears.

Depends on how yours doesnt fit.

Ok, seems i miss understood what my diff builder was saying.
The problem is the center cant be offset far enough before fouling the diff carrier.

It seems to be the opposite to the problem that was disscussed in this thread http://www.toymods.net/forums/showthread.php?t=4816.
Instead of a spacer, the crown wheel needs to have the back of it machined down... which he isnt comfortable with doing.

He talked to another guy who suggested a diff carrier on a LN106 may work... ??

id just machine the crown down as there's plenty of meat on them and ive seen it done on atleast five different occasions (1 being my old 4wd lux).

i had the opposite problem when fitting my 3.9 hilux lsd to my 4.8 housing so i had to buy a 4.1 housing
maybe you need to start with a 4.8 housing
i have one spare that you could have but im a long way away

Thanks all.... gives me an idea of what i need to look at doing.
Its going to be fun trying to find a wrecker who will sell me a diff carrier without a center attached

Are you sure the pinion doesn't also foul in the housing?

I have found that I couldn't use the 4.1:1 pinion in the early Hilux carrier as the diameter of the pinion is too large to fit.

I have sourced a later model Hilux/Hiace diff carrier (around 1996 model) that should suit what I need but haven't got back to trying to assemble it all as of yet... You can see the difference in the carrier on the outside around where the pinion gear sits.

Is your pinion shaft a fine spline? If so you will need the later model Hilux diff flange too.

So is this the fine spline?

That is the fine spline. The early diff has a course spline. You most likely find that you can't use the diff flange from the RN25 diff on that pinion.

If you manage to pick up a late model carrier then you can pick up the front flange at the same time. You can get new flanges on eBay or from 4WD/diff specialists.

A carrier out of a Hiace with 4.375 ratio or 4.1 or 4.3 will do but not the 5.28 or 5.7 carrier
Hilux 4.55 4.3 or 4.1 carriers will do as well but not 4.875
