    Default R154 gearboxes

    Hey all

I have been rebuilding a gearbox for a mate and had trouble with the gear selectors.

We were lead to believe that it was a W58 but i asked a work mate (does our gearboxes for us at work) what needs to go where (we didnt have a manual) so we had another W58 up the back that he said i could open up to work it out. So i took the rear half off and had a look. Now on the W58 at work it had reverse and 5th gear at the back, my mates one has reverse on the bell housing side of the intermedate plate and 5th on the other side.

So i did a little research on the net today and found a manual for a W58. It was the same as the one at my work and the same site also had a manual for R154 with pictures.

Now we are lead to believe its a R154 going by the pictures but the 2jzge bell housing and 1jz clutch we have both fit.

Does anyone know what it could be? Im think some cross bread between W58 and R154

    Cheers
    Craig

I doubt its a crossbreed as the r154 is a substantially larger gearbox than the w5* series much like the comparison of a w series box and a t series box. I would also hazzard a guess that the gears would not be interchangable between the two.

Actually, jump on wikipedia and search for w series transmission. It lists all the ratios and you could also get the r series box ratios too. Since your box is open just coulnt some teeth and then compare with what the site says.

are you sure its not a 1jzgte bellhousing?

The R154 is significantly larger and noticably heavier than a w58. Side by side the R154 is alot wider.

measure the length of the input shaft

R154 is significantly longer. 32ish mm for memory.

on another topic; linden, hows the adaptor going?

I know that they cant be a cross bread but thats what its like.

100% sure its not a 1jz bell housing as its off my bosses crashed 2jzge jza80.

Its all back together now anyway. Just combined the W58 and R154 manuals and worked it out.

In the end it was just a few small lock outs that sit in the actual selector shafts

You might have scored a W58 with some crazy JDM racing gearset in it. A friend of mine accidentally made a similar score with an RB20 gearbox that had a close-ratio gearset with a weird shift pattern, it took us a while to figure out why all the gears were in the wrong spot (eg first gear was where fifth normally is).

    Anyway just an idea.

Its a factory defect gearbox. So it hasn't been in a car before. Its was a defect because it had one noisey bearing.

    So no crazy gear sets.

I will work out first and second gear ratios today before i seal the box back up

Not sure how but the wrecker/importer we got the 1jz from had 5 W58's that were factory defects/rejects.

They were going to rebuild them selfs and sell them as a brand new box but we got there before that rebuilt them and managed to get it for $550 including the new bearing.

Wow that's a really decent price, I might have to ask around the wreckers here and see if they can do something similar, I'm sure my box will break sooner rather than later and it would be nice to have the chance to replace it with something new like that. Really want an R154 but depending on how long I can make a W58 last it's still a good option.
