The olds have a V6 Camry and it has the diagnosis plug up near the firewall on the passengers side. Maybe find out if its throwing a code at you ?
My son's girlfried has a 1996 v6 camry, which spat out all the oil when some sort of bypass pipe let go. The engine stopped and now will not crank. There is a light on the dash (picture of an engine I think) and the handbook says see your Toyota dealer. I am hoping that this is a built in immobiliser designed to protect the motor when the oil pressure goes. Does anyone have any experience with this, and how do I go about resetting it. (apart from going to my Toyota dealer) Hope you can help. Just want to get the thing going to see if the motor is buggered, or repairable.![]()

there is no built in immobiliser to stop the engine when it loses oil pressure unless its an old 2h diesel
get the diagnosis plug under the bonnet and bridge the te1 and e1 terminals and post the results back up here
to reset it remove the efi fuse for 1 minute and then refit
what happens when you turn the key? nothing?
starter motor might've died?
they usually make some kind of noise though.

uh oh..
get a torch and check both side of the block carefully.
also, try to turn the crank pulley with a spanner... if it turns up to a point and stops... you're in trouble...![]()

im with oldcorollas driving till it stops is not that good for an engine
doesnt sound good
I agree doesn't sound good... Did the motor stop itself, or did your son stop it as soon as he saw the oil light on, if its the first scenario the motor's STUFFED, if its the second scenario & he shut it down straight away you may be lucky, But if that was the case it would still crank over.....I would place a rather large bet on scenario # 1.. Obviously check that the battery is ok.... The engine picture on the dash would be the engine management light that comes on every time you go to start the car, but in your case stays on cause the car's not starting ...Interesting what light's people only notice when something doesn't work, No offence mean't its something i have come across that a lot of people seem to do..( notice )..
to all those who replied to my thread thankyou. I apologise for the lack of reponse, however, my personal life took a turn for the worst. It turned out that the engine threw number 6 bigend, punched a hole in the sump and broke the alloy cage joining the engine to the gearbox. Replacement engine now in car.
Cheers, and again, thankyou for your suggestions

thanks for the follow up...
a friend had a 4cyl camry throw a rod... but i hadn't heard of the V6's also doing it..
seems rather strange...
hope personal life is now taking turn for the better
\/\/\/ umm.. don't you think that the engine would have stopped at the same time it threw the rod? so the oil trail occurred after the engine stopped?![]()

Hehe the oil trail did no give it away? I picture this as a question to a mechanic{even a bad one}. "she stopped and she will not start, it had the oil light on for the last 5000km and it stopped a few times but if i left it for awhile it started again, so i drove it"Originally Posted by spy
