Attaching things to chassis rail

I want to fit the cruise control pump into the engine bay of my car.
About th only spot available is on top of the left chassis rail just in front of the firewall.

As I can't get at the other side of the rail, I'm thinking about fixing it wil self tapping screws/bolts.

The only connections to it are one electrical plug & one vacuum line.

Are there any issues with doing this (apart from drilling 2 or 3 small holes in the chassis rail)?

Hi,

I try not to drill anythinh into my chassis rails. When I got the rear-sway bar attaced they were able to customise the bar to use existing manufacturing holes in the chasis rails.

Aren't you trying to sell your car? (I assume you are doing this to the Caldina?). If so, why put in the effort when you're going to sell it?

Its not for the Caldina (I bet no one wll help now that they know I'm no asking about a Toyota). The Caldina's had cruise control for about 4 years now

I'd like to try to fit it to the chassis rail where there's already captive nuts, but there's an engine in the way

Oh, & there's no room left on the sides anywhere

i would try to avoid if possible any modifications to the firewall. having said that, im currently modifying my lift pump setup under the car and it looks like the only way to go about it is largeish self tapers in the chasis for the new pump bracket.

Who mentioned anything bout modifying the firewall? (Not that I haven't already done that so I could fita hydraulic clutch system on a car that was never available with it

)

theres some rta docs around (link anyone?!) that describe with diagrams how (if you must) attach things to chassis rails

Avoid welding or bolting to the flange areas of
chassis and subframe rails but in anycase, do not
weld across the flanges of chassis rails.

Fit spacer tubes when bolting through hollow
sections to prevent crushing of the section.

Any bolt, nut, stud or other fastener subject to
vibration should be locked against slackening
eg: use spring washers or nyloc nuts.

Any hole cut in the body or floor panel must be
sealed against entry of exhaust fumes and it must
not be possible for the driver or passenger to
contact moving parts.

So by that definition you can drill and tap it as long as you loctite or use a spring washer.

And seal against exhaust fumes.

That's the way I read it too. Considering its going to be 2 x 4mm holes I don't see a drama, but does anyone know an engineer I could ring to double check with.
