    Ahhh, the plot thickens.

What's a "1 way LSD"? and who sells them? What "type" of LSD are they?

I apologise if this has all been covered before.

A 1way LSD is one which only locks under acceleration. 2way locks under both acceleration and deceleration, while 1.5 way locks less savagely under Decel, but still locks under accel.

Bill, if you are going to get rid of that 3.89 LSD im chasing one as my Grande one has reverted to being an open diff.

No one we know of has broken a Truetrac yet. JZA80 Torsens don't have a rap for breaking either. It tends to be only the JZA70 (and I have heard of JZZ30 ones which would have to be similar) which are causing the bad name for everything, and even then it's usually when someone has decided to do a full drag launch on slicks or something.

Bill: here is a good reference for how LSDs work:
    http://www.club4ag.com/faq%20and%20t...ential_101.htm
As well as a good rundown on the differences between 1-way 1.5-way and 2-way.

If you need someone to build up your diff, i highly recommend Boss Automotive at Lonsdale. Great guys.
They are building up my Hilux rear end (with Torsen center) for my RA28 at the moment.

I however dont recommend Toyoland who gave me a F series carrier/center instead of a G

no offence to any "truetrac" owners

but clearly bill enjoys a good skid, and while im aware that torsens dont "wear" out perse' we all know they dont lock shock loading...from say...doing skids

now thats all ok if you have an endless supply of torsens for free...but lets be honest...a TrueTrac aint cheap bruvva...

utlimately your call bill...if it was me and I owned your car id go the clutch LSD

especially if youre gonna go more power and stuff like a bigger stall/nitrous/etc etc

Thanks, thanks, thanks and thanks, I'll look them up.

You've all been very helpful. Where would I get a Cusco 1(?) way from?

I've found the Cusco site http://www.cusco.co.jp/english/e_cont.html and am reading.

Boss diffs in lonsdale can supply a cusco or you can buy from nengun...prolly saving yourself over $500

you would want an RS...they are generally more of a street diff, make no more noise than a stocker and dont clunk...the MZ is the track diff, very harsh and noisy and awesoem for a track car...but a bit too rough for the street...

dont get a KAAZ either...very mean diffs for the street...

Cusco RS 1 WAY LSD is what you want...part number is LSD 160 L15

and they are $1000 from nengun

    Hey thanks!

What's involved in fitting them to my diff? What do I need to know?

    Added:
Has anyone bought from them before? They're are in Japan right? No contact details slows me down a bit. So, for an extra $500 someone (like Boss) will import and land it for me?

    simple

    remove diff from car

    take diff to diff shop

    give diff shop new centre

    pay diff shop money

put diff centre back in car with new Cusco centre fitted

    do skids

    win

seriously...I wouldnt attempt it myself...there is a black art to getting bacjlash and preload set on a diff right...there is a diff place in the middle of the city I would use...i think they are called adelaide differential specialists or something...do friggen good work with me and my mates diffs...

I cant remeber their name though

    ill try and find it...

they are literally in the city...just off west tce near grote st

Again, you're basing this on the JZA70 torsens which let go under those conditions all the time. Have you had a look at the JZA80 nutters in the US running ridiculous quarter-mile times with stock drivetrain? That's pretty solid proof that a torsen can be plenty strong.

And like JCMO said, I haven't heard of anyone breaking a TrueTrac yet. Remember they're designed for offroading in Hilux 4WD's.

    hey

gave this some more thought today

have you thought about getting a 1.5 way lsd, theyre a lot more forgiving than chunky ass 2 way lsd's, a begginers lsd if you will. depending on your application you may want to look into it, for street use they are very easy to drive quickly with, give you a lot less understeer on corner entry, far more stable under brakes, however you will lose some responsiveness, so the complete opposite to say what mr1jz would want. who has opted to weld his diff, but thats cool he's from elizabeth

i reckon a 1.5 way with a bit of beefing up and some 3.9's would be a really nice setup for street, i wont do stupid shit to you in the wet coming into corners quick and you can still slide it on the way out

my 2c, but will largely come down to experience and application

I went for a drive last night with the new 4.11's and I'm loving' the extra pep. So much fun to drive around. It's always ready to accelerate hard. Haven't "tested" the LSD yet. What's interesting is that my mechanic tells me that the internals in the 4.11:1 look "completely" different to the 3.89:1 "LSD" that came out. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of it because he buttoned it up before I could get there. He says he could definitely see what looked like shim or clutch type packs. Any ideas what he might have been looking at and why it looks so different to what I have? Does anyone know Leon who I purchased this from and what he might have done to it? He said it was rebuilt a few months before I got it.

The 1 way seems ideal. I don't fancy having the diff lock up on me on a wet night when I back off from speed. Unless I've misunderstood the effects of a two way.
