Just out of interest with your hydro fan setup did you get the controller box running? the reason i ask is that im curious to know if the controller just kick the fan in flat out or if its variable speed type setup.
I have the hydro fan on my 1j but have never hooked it up for the last 10 000k of driving and havent had any heating issues. due to not having the controller im thinking of just putting the solinoid on a switch type control for if the car starts to run hot with the aircon on.
Thats to bad about your auto box have you found a new one yet?
Nice to see a jz motor in something a bit different aswell.

Hydro fan is variable speed, however I believe you can just wire in 12v and it runs flat out, so it wouldn't be hard to make it an on/off setup with a regular thermostat.

yep you can wire it to +12v so it runs at full speed.
i did this as a trial for a couple days and the temperature still was too high so im now going with AU thermo fans.
im pretty sure the solenoid starts to close after about 3k rpm as it seems like the fan is spinning too fast. my theory was confirmed after i had it hard wired and hit 6krpm a couple times, the pressure hose ruptured (nice red oil everywhere).
though i put another hose on a and hit 6k rpm a few more times and it hasnt busted
hello
Hmm interesting!
so you think the control box would reduce voltage depending on rpm?
I have thought about wiring it through a relay and that temp switch in the bottom if the radiator, until i can find a control box for it.
thanks for the help guys .

it doesnt reduce voltage, it PWMs the valve to alter fluid flow
hello
ahh so really to make it work correctly i need the control box.
was hoping i could just vary the voltage to control the flow.

I've recently rigged up a custom hydraulic fan setup using a combination of JZS147 Aristo, JZA70 Supra and UZZ31 Soarer bits running off both JZS147 or JZA70 Hydraulic Fan Control ECUs at max speed ie with AC on and temp sensor removed (overheating setting), and I've never seen more than 4.5 volts at the pump's solenoid.Originally Posted by brett_celicacoupe
It seems to range from 3.0 to 4.5 volts during the testing I've done so far.
Pinouts for the ECU if anyone needs them:

3 SOLENOID -
4 GROUND
5 IDLE ECU

Yes, a decent multimeter was used to measure voltages.

you need an oscilliscope to look at these sorts of things accurately
hello
Obviously if it's PWM as is the case with the solenoid. The point I was trying to make is that it's also not a constant 12V that the solenoid needs to operate.

Brett, when you come down my multimeter can read PWMs properlyIt will give you frequency, voltage and duty cycle... and can record it too so you can upload to a PC and graph it
(fukker cost $200 and I can claim it on tax
)
The only thing that might happen if you run a constant 12V is that the solenoid can overheat (which is why you dont want to run more than about 85% duty on your injectors), so it depends on the cooling capacity as to whether a constant 12v will damage it.

that hydro fan is going once the engine is out anyway.
ive got the non hydro water pump now and a det of AU thermos
the guy i bought the engine off cant find me a box so my options are either try flush the old box out again or find another 2nd hand box.
option #1 will be a gamble and it will be even more annoying if its no better after a clean up.
im not sure if the 1UZ A340 can be swapped in but its something else i can look into. no idea if input spline/length is the same. it might have less clutch disks too
