is the rattle from the chain? or definitely valves?
are your base circles not round? ie, more clearance in some places than others?
I just adjusted my tappets to 0.008 (Intake) and 0.012 (Exhaust) of an inch which is what was recommended when i searched on the forum, and my motor (22RE) is still rattly.. Whats with that.. I thought id finally have a nice quiet motor but i hardly notice the difference.. Maybe something else is worn? Someone healp im sick of the rattle..
Thanks,
Chris.

on 22r's if you tighten the rocker cover down too tight you the rocker arms can tap on the inside of the rocker cover
loosen the rocker cover nuts slightly and see if it goes away
Chris how did you adjust the tappets ie; where was the cam positioned & did you have to tighten or loosen the tappets, also by how much roughly did you adjust them & did you check the clearance at the tip of the valve or at the cam ...( should be checked at the valve tip ) ...
Everything seemed fine when i did it.. Yeah I had the cam in the right position (top dead center on the compression stroke) and yeah i checked at the valve tip.. I just had to loosen the lock nut and adjust with a screw driver..
The only thing i noticed was the exhaust valve springs seemed a bit soft (I could push the exhaust valve down)? The tappets all seemed not too bad though. Cyliners 1 and 4 were pretty much fine and 2 and 3 were alright only needed to change the intake side..
Were the specs i got right? Maybe they need less clearance..
Thanks,
Chris.
did you adjust it in the specific order mate?
From haynes manual:
cyl 1 @ TDC, adjust intakes on cyl 1 and 2 and exhuast on 1 and 3.
rotate 360degrees, adjust intakes on cyl3 and 4, and exhaust on 2 and 4.
oh and those clearances you have are when the engines WARM
what is the stock seated spring pressure? maybe 50-60lb? 25-30kg? were you pushing that much?Originally Posted by pisso001
were all the springs that easy to push down or only a couple?

is the noise definitely from up top? Maybe have a poke around with a screw driver to your ear to pinpoint the noise?
Hello.
I didnt do it in that specific order.. I dont have a manual.. I just turned the motor and watched the cam until the tappets had no load on them.. Is that wrong?
Dono if i would have been pushing that hard, might have.. Only noticed one spring..
Im pretty sure the noice is from the tappets.. What else could it be?
Thanks,
Chris,
