Did you drain some to smell it or just stick your nose near the oil fill cap?
Hi guys just notice the other day that the clean oil in my 1jz smells like petrol, the engine has probably only run for 20 mins mostly at idle with the new oil, is this something I should be concerned about?

I'm concerned about starting up a what was probably a cold, drained, unprimed engine, except for some sort of diagnostics/tests/whatever, for 20 minutes of idling.
I'd expect a petroleum product to smell similar to petrol/gas after 20 min. no matter how good the fuel system is, or even a broken one that functions well in all other ways.
It's a matter of the situation & degree.
How strong is this petrol smell compared with other experience?
Thermostat, cold start temp sender/sensor, cold start injector, or operator error.
I have no experience with 1jz/whatever you're working on.
Oil smelling like petrol is usually a symptom of running way too rich. With excessive amounts of petrol in the combustion chamber some of it drains down the bores into the oil. Check your tune and make sure you change that oil once it's sorted!

with motorbikes its not uncommon for the crankcase to be filled to the top with petrol.
carbies that are on a 45degree angle down (CBR250, ZXR250 etc) flood and fill the cylinders.
also be careful that if the cylinder does have fuel in it, that you empty it before cranking. many con rods have been bent like this.
hello
not enough info in orig post but if the engine has sat around for a while the rings could be stuck therefor not sealing and the petrol can goe down the bore to the oil.
if it runs fine take it for a drive and see if it ciears up then change the oil and it should be fine.
minor fuel smell is normal but if it smells like alot of fuel it can be a bad sign.
cheers

Take the car for a drive, and get some temp into it, the fuel will evaporate. Then check the oil, if smell is still present, you have stuffed compression rings. If the fuel smell is only there just after start, time to investigate cold start, and IAC.
Some trivia for you. In the aviation industries in the colder northern snow bound countries, it was common practice to dilute piston engine oil with fuel prior to shut down. This helped reduce the cold oil drag load when starting.
cheers Chuck.
