What's your budget? This is the biggest deciding factor. You won't get much improvement out of a NA 22R until you start throwing big bucks at it.
due to dodgy p-plate laws im unable to go turbo/v8 as im sure most people know
atm i own a 1994 toyota hilux which has the stock 22r engine in it
wot possible mods could i do to get a bit more power out of it without turbo???
im thinking of doing a conversion to a 3rzfe and then turbo later on.
any help is greatly appreciated.
cheers

id suggest a cam and a 32/36 downdraft...ditch all the ghey emissions gear on it too...
you wont see big gains but it will sound heaps better at least

budget is around $1000-$2000
i was thinking better carbie, new exhaust
im not looking for huge power gains just a little bit more power.
weber carb
extractors and exhaust
maybe cam as well
Source the EFI system for it, extractors, cam.
I found with mine, simply changing to premium fuel and retuning it made a huge difference too.
The EFI system was on the 1990 to 199?? Tacomas in the states. It may have been on the 4Runners/Surfs here as well.
If you don't want to convert to EFI then replace the mechanical fuel pump with an electric carby pump and get a webber carby sized for the engine.
Petrol is for washing parts, alcohol's for drinking but NITRO IS FOR RACING!

it was also in the RA65 celicas here
Personally I'd go a better carb, extractors, and leave it at that (maybe consider a cam if you want to go all out). Save your dosh for something further down the track. Too many good engines here to bother too much with a 22r (especially an n/a 22r)
yea i was thinking of EFI conversion but im not sure.
i am gona be getting a new engine in the next 12-18 months i just want a lil bit more power for the mean time.

If its just a temporary thing, then I'd just go the fuel pump and carby and get it retuned. Trust me, with how light the '94 Hilux is you'll really notice any extra power you get out of it, even if its just retuned to run on 98 octane.

i was just looking in the classified section and found a 7mge for $200 which is just the engine. would this be a good choice (with some work done) to put into the hilux??

Hi,
It's certainly a more potent engine than the 22RE, however the overall cost could be a killer.
First, you have to make sure that it will fit into your engine bay... then you need to fabricate engine mounting points for the 7M, then a radiator, maybe you need the ECU (if it doesn't come with the engine), then you need an adapter to make sure the 7M engine fits to your clutch/gearbox.
The extra power of the 7M will mean your gearbox and diff may become weak points and fail, therefore a stronger gearbox and diff could be required. With the extra power the brakes will need to be upgraded and finally, putting a 7M into a HiLux will require an engineers certificate to approve it for road use.
Ultimately, it will not be a cheap exercise, as is most engine conversions where you are putting in a lot more power and a different engine class (ie M series engine (7M) into a vehicle that uses an R series (22RE) engine), I think you'll need a fair bit more than $2k to do such a conversion.

Hi,
The cheapest and easiest engine to fit would be an R-series, which would mean an 18R-C, 18R-G, 20R, or 22R/RE.
Let's discount the 18R-C and the 20R. So, this leaves you with an 18R-G or doing something to your existing 22R engine. The 18R-G is more powerful, but the 22R has more torque. Buying an 18R-G would take a bit out of your budget and you'd want it pulled down and checked to make sure it's okay, as many 18R-Gs are now quite long in the tooth and have been thrashed - so expect to have to get new rings, and the carbies (assuming you get a carby one) will be old and probably need a full rebuild (approx $750 for a full rebuild/retune of the carbs).
So, if it was me, I'd be thinking about getting work done to the existing engine in the car. Your current engine is a known quantity, has plenty of torque and will come up with more power with some nice mods. Buying an 18R-G can open a whole can of worms and costs 'cos you just do not know the condition the engine is in.
As mentioned, you can get an adaptor plate to fit a weber... maybe even get a twin webber adaptor plate, Get some nice extractors and the cam reground. That should fall within your budget and some appreciable improvement in engine performance.
But, that's what I'd do... your ideas maybe totally different.

Are the NA 22r heads similar enough to the 18rg to attempt a hybrid transplant like with the 2tg/3t variants? i.e 22r block with 18rg head? has anyone attempted this before?
Cheers
