That is the cat temperature sensor. When the cat gets too hot then it will tell the ecu to go into a safety mode.
hi guys, i tried searching before posting but could not find it.
i have a jzx90 mark II with a 1j, fully stock
i had my stock cat replaced yesterday with a metalcat. we found a sensor on the cat (abt half a ciggie long) and we have no idea what it is. the fella who did the work is a member here and knows his 1j, but he too is stumped. can anyone:
a) id what is it
b) the consequence of not sticking it into the new cat.
many thanks in advance
chris

and I don't think anybody refits them when they fit an exhaust. Therefore, should be fine without it.
thanks chris. so its ok just to tuck it somewhere securely under the car?
yeah, that is what I would be doing. Just check to see if you get an error light on the dash for it with it not plugged in. I wouldn't think you would as it should only get an error when it is too hot and if it is in free air then it never will be. If you snip it, then I think you will get an error. AFAIK mine has always been snipped and I get the error on the dash.
take the globe out of the cluster if it comes on
hello
thanks guys. appreciation shown in the form of + reps
Just be careful with leaving it out.
I had one on an import subaru, with it unplugged, the car went into limp home mode.
On those, the sensor worked by breaking the circuit when the temp was too hot, not by completing the circuit.
I'm not sure how the toyota one works (I don't even have a cat on my import), but how hard is it for an exhaust shop to weld a nut on there for it to screw into?
get a pair of vice grips on the sensor, and yank as hard as you can.
the sensor will pull the grommet with it, you'll see the two wires going into the car under the drivers seat, if you pulled hard enough, these wires will be ripped out of the plug they're in, and you'll be able to pull the wires out of the rubber grommet, throw the sensor and wires in the bin, and replace the grommet to seal it all up.
have fun.

Wagonist: I agree with your idea of having a nut welded on, but if it was one of those fancy 'metal-cats' the ones that they advertise, I'd be loathed to go cutting and welding into it myself.
I know the answer thing is place the sensor in the exhaust somewhere nearby, but that would pretty well defeat the purpose and be as useful as having it waving around in the air.
Just my 2c anyway.
Also, Eldar, WTF are you talking about? that sounds very unnecessarily violent and wouldn't really achieve anything?
Personally, I removed the sensor from my exhaust, and had NO problems with the ECU. No codes or anything. I would have to check the TSRM, but I believe the sensor decreases in resistance as teh temperatures rise, so no sensor = cold sensor.
my sensor was removed and the lines severed. the temp light will not light up so no dramas.

to remove this sensor, you simply need to yank the **** as hard as you can.
it "detaches" itself from the plug inside the cabin through the hole in the tranny tunnel.
when you do this, you will be left with a sensor, complete with two strands of wire coming out of it, a sheath for the wires, and the rubber grommet for sealing up the hole that the wires go through (the wires go through it).
you pull the wires back through the rubber bung, and ditch the sensor/sheath/wires in the bin, and your left with a rubber grommet, the perfect size for the hole thats now in the tranny tunnel, where, previously, the CAT temp sensor wires came through.
replace the bung in the hole without the wires/sensor, and its all sealed up nicely, without cutting anything, and having messy shit everywhere.
basically, you re-use the stock bung without the wires in it for a cleaner look.
